is this the right banjo for my startwin
as the one that was fitted previous
made a seal to the rocker box and this one
doesnot will the oil squirt out past the rocker spindle *help*
-
Hello, on the photos looks like you've got metal washers\seals, try fitting correct diameter fiber washers instead, which works very well. Maybe get a new set of bolts as well.

the meatl washers are cup washers
thay fit into the recess on the banjo
i think fibere washers will leak its more
the look of the banjo as the other one was
different as it sealed to the rocker box,s
-
As the parts are just here in front of me, here's a picture. Correct banjo bolt with dome at the head end + 1 fibre washer forming perfectly = zero leak.

do you hav a pic of youre banjp pipe thanks
and do youthink i will have to draw my rocker spindle,s
through a bit more
-
Should be available from any parts supplier.
edit: Guess I could somehow adjust the rocker spindles on mine? but the fibre washer has been doing fine for as long as I've had the bike.

Hi Bill,
looking at your pics it looks loke you have the banjo fittings inside out???
The larger side goes inwards up against the fibre/copper washer and the rockerbox!!
So it fits over the end of the rocler spindle!!!
The drilled bolt head is tapered and this fits into a corrisponding taper on the outside of the banjo,
use a tiny amount of Dirko sealant on the taper
If you are buying new oil bolts be VERY CAREFUL to get the ones with the correct sizes restrictor hole
The ones fo single cylinder models have different sized holes and the rocker drain bolts on "B"'s are larger again

the holes on the banjo are both the same either side
as are the taper,s??
-
Yep, looking closer at your pics this time, mystery... not a BSA top, or what is it?
-
1949 BSA 500/LS STARTWIN thay come with two seperate rocker boxes??
-
Hi Bill,
If the new pipes/banjos are diff from the originals then they are obviously wrong
As far as I am aware the opposite end of the spindle will have a shoulder on it (inside the box)
The outer nut should be tightened to pull the spindle shoulder up against the inside of the rocker box
I would think oil will leak out along the spindles unless the banjo sits against the rocker box/washer
My 2 cent opinion

Bill
On a longstroke & poss others (I only know Perkins longstrokes) there should be a fibre washer between the the banjo & rockerbox.
There should not be a metal washer, cup or otherwise on the outside as yours appears to have.
If that is a washer between the bolt & rockerbox it would appear you have incorrect bolts as they should like those posted by e.
The bolt is a taper fit forming an oiltight seal.
But it would appear that what you have is a pattern banjo not a brass with copper pipe original, so who knows how it's mean't to work, obviously doesn't though!
Will post a pic of correct banjo in the morning if someone doesn't do first.
What happened to the previous one you mention?

Bill the spindles do go up against shoulders inside the rocker box so firstly make sure the nuts on the other side are done up tight. Now usually this pulls the spindles in further than what yours appear to be. Then you need the correct banjo set up, should be easily available from any of the bike shops like C@D's etc. or even on evil-bay. Just going by the pictures your bolts look to be the right ones, just make sure the holes in them are about the same size as the ones in the picture E posted.

I'm comparing to my A10 rocker cover, does not have the 2 nuts (see picture), and I can see more differences. And chaterlea25 has some comments as well.
-
The two nuts you point out are how you adjust the valve clearances. You remove them to poke a feeler gauge in. The longstroke motors have a different rocker box set up, they have two seperate rocker boxes. When I get a chance I will take a photo of the top of my spare motor and post it.
