Title: Kickstart Ratchet Nut..
Post by: brackenfel on 06.11. 2010 16:06
Dear All,
Once again I'm here seeking guidance / reassurance !!
Having successfully reassembled the clutch now I'm now "tidying up" the other side..! I'd left the outer gearbox cover loose as I hadn't sorted the kickstart spring, neither had I been able to tighten up the kickstart ratchet nut properly as I wasn't able to lock the shaft easily..
Now it's in the bike I can lock the shaft but when I tighten the nut right up the whole ratchet mech tightens up too.. Can't really work out why although I have replaced the bush but that's the same as the one that came out only not worn!
If I tighten it up so that the fixed part of the ratchet is firm & the nut just about holding firm it's fine.. I'm tempted to leave it like this & use the lockwasher to keep things in one place.

Can anyone see a problem with this??

Thanks as always,

Adrian

interesting one this, when tightened up the ratchet ( bigger bit) should be able to move back on the bush far enough to disengage from the fixed bit ( just ).
from memory the order of things should be washer - spring - ratchet (over bush) - fixed bit - tab washer - nut

G'day Adrian,
overtightening the nut is squashing the bush out of shape and binding the ratchet. I use loctite and the tab washer with the nut just done up firm.
Cheers

it's a while since I was in the gearbox but thinking about it would taking a tad of the end of the bush be an issue?, allowing the nut to be tightened with out distorting the bush or am I missing something

Thanks Muskrat & Bill,
I've had a play.. Winding the nut up the thread feels tighter than I'd expect so I've got it until it just pinches up the outer part of the ratchet, leaving the inner part free to rotate.
I did consider Bill's advice about maybe shortening the bush but the sticky thread put me off a little as I remember both ends of the s/h mainshaft I'm using had the threads slightly scuffed & it took a bit of work to get the nuts on the start of the thread.

I think I'll use the lock washer really closely peened to the nut & make sure that holds everything fast.

Thanks again for all your help...

Adrian

Hi Adrian, I was just re reading your issue with the binding rachet and have had a similiar event. I dismantled the gearbox, groan, and percieved that the bronze bush on the inner end of the shaft was worn and allowing the shaft to float inwards. There should perhaps be a thrust washer in there to prevent this wear. Anyway, i measured the endfloat, found the appropriate thichness and ID washer and have put that in. It has fixed the problem. However i should add that it would be much easier to just replace the bronze bush as it is very difficult to reinsert the shaft with the washer on it.
Hope that helps
