Title: Speedo cable query
Post by: iansoady on 23.12. 2010 11:45
The speedo cable inner on my 1961 Flash has a red plastic / nylon bush affair at the top (speedo) end. I have a feeling this should actually be at the other, gearbox end. Or does it actually matter?

It's too cold to go in the garage so I'm just sitting here pondering things.....

Funny you should ask that since I had the same decision to make. I found that the way it works for me without dripping oil from the gearbox is to tighten up the gearbox cable end with the plastic bush on it first and then connect the plain speedo end, in that order. Result no more leaks.

Aha...

Now you mention it there was a slight leak from the gearbox end. Previous owner must have installed it upside down.

Funnily enough I did ask this forum about the oil leak some months ago but due to rapidly advancing old age had forgotten about it.

Sorry to go slightly offtrack here but my speedo cable has a split in it about 10 inches from the gearbox and it leaks oil, is this becuase the outer plastic covering is split or should oil not come past gearbox/speedo drive.
Also I agree... it is to cold to go in the garage even with the heating on.
