Firstly the good news - The A10 passed its MOT last week and the process of enjoying it has at last started. I am now going through the "shake-down" phase to find out what I've missed / failed to do properly but so far only the gear lever has showed signs of making a bid for freedom...
Thanks to all here who have patiently answered my questions over the last year or so...
My question relates to the "other" BSA but apart from the engine it's remarkably similar being the B33. I have the Haynes etc but am having difficulty working out exactly how to remove the rear wheel bearings which are worn. It's a 1954 S/A frame, QD wheel.
Pics below show either side, LH & RH.. Can anyone describe in simple terms how to get the bearings out as I don't want to be attempting to apply force in the wrong direction! The spline side has a LH thread retaining ring which comes out - left in situ at present to stop me losing it!..

Funnily though I had my B33 back wheel out... (1953 plunger but same QD wheel) only yesterday, to clean and paint up the inner of rim. My MOT hopefully is only a day or two away. Do you have the spline side rubber ring and opposite side dust cover?
I did notice my bearings were very loose, BUT when pressed up as like fitted in bike with spindle tight... the bearing then felt smooth and okay. I wonder if the arrangement should be like that?

It's been a while since I had the rear hub on the A7 apart, but iirc you only have to remove the retaining rings and can knock them out in either direction, by means of the distance piece between the bearings.
The exploded view might be helpful.

Many thanks for the diagram Markus.. If I can ask a daft question - is there a retaining ring both sides?? the spline side clearly has slots to remove it, I can see nothing obvious on the other to enable removal....
LJ - yes mine has the rubber ring (had to hack it out as it had perished & stuck the wheel & hub together. The dust cover was on so hard that I had to drill out the rivets (presumably inserted by a PO) holding the two bits together & use a Mole wrench to get the inner part off. There was also a felt ring but that will be on the shopping list too!
Even when fully tightened up there was too much slack in my bearings to get past even the most generous MOT Examiner!

Just did this take the retainers off and they both tap out from each side,, tap it out from the opposite side. I used a piece of round brass stock

The swinging arm hub only has a retaining ring on one side.

I presume the other (LHS) side is just some sort of cap & just comes out when you drift the bearing out, or maybe you should try & get it off first? (It doesn't seem keen to move!). I also presume I just drift the central spacer tube out as that at least seems to move....

When the bearing comes out the spacer just drops out

Hi all, although this thread is quite useful, has anyone got advise on how to remove the plunger type dust cover, without destroying it.
Any advise, tips or previous experience (posts) would be helpful.

OK, so after no real responses, I'll give this a go.
The plunger dust cover 'sleeve part' that sits over the hub is so much longer, than on a swing arm dust cover, so trying to just exert some pressure on the disc will not suffice to remove it.
"The only way to remove it is".
DO NOT LEVER ANYTHING at all, you will Fu:CK IT UP.
Really clean the whole thing well, so as to find the spot welds.
Once you have found the spot welds, carefully drill them out. If you drill through both plates it wont be too much to worry about.
Then cautiously lever, 'separate' the cover plate away from the sleeve part.
Then with a bit of careful heat and leverage you can get the 'inner sleeve ' part off the hub. There is no thread, only a very very snug fit
You will of course need to weld the two parts back together though, and if there was some nice drilling work, followed by a bit of nice welding, and a bit of sanding, the end result should be sweet.
Bang it back on carefully.

Yes, they are right buggers to get off after half a century. I got mine off with heat and tyre levers. It got rather bent during this but I managed to straighten it enough to reuse it. I did ease the fit with emery cloth and greased it when refitting. I think new ones are available.
