Title: clutch housing with cylinder shaped roller bearings

I have an older clutch housing with cylinder shaped roller bearings that inevitably fall out when dismantling. Can anyone tell me how many roller bearing there should be or the size of an equivalent modern bearing replacement?

G'day Guy,
              that must be a four spring jobbie. 20 is the number of rollers. Can't help with the size, sorry.
They are a bugger, try assembling the hub and basket with the rollers then place on the shaft.

Could also be the plunger 6 spring clutch. Place the clutch basket upside down and use grease to hold the rollers in place. With the plunger, the primary chain and sprocket goes on in one action. Fairly easy with a bit of practice ;-)

Hi Guy,
The four spring clutch takes 20 rollers 0.250in dia 0.225in. long
DO NOT USE 1/4 X 1/4 ROLLERS  as the clutch will bind
Dont know about the plunger clutch

*IF* you feel the need to use grease to hold the rollers in... Dont use to much as it will eventually 'fling' and find its way in between the clutch plates. With patience you should be able to use tweezers and place each one in with out too much difficulty.

Hi Guy, re the fitting the easiest way to fit , smear some HMP grease on the adaptor fit rollers ,fit adaptor to shaft,hey presto rollers stay in place ,not to much grease can gum up plates but it works ,well it does in freezing uk ( summer) not so sure in Oz . I've just done this 3 times this week Kept forgeting something ( old age ) and it wasn't a pain last time took onlt 2- 3 mins to fit adaptor bearings outer and inner baskets and start tightening nut. hope this helps Bob.  ps had a plunger when I was 16 used same on it worked okay.

A very handy tool to have for this job and others is the telescopic magnetic pick tool, mount a roller to it end on and insert into basket.
Also if you lose one it's often sitting having a rest on the rear of the primary inner, nestled on the web that houses the screw hole for the cover.
Some sort of Cosmic influence going on there
