Title: litle gear shifter mod
Post by: bsa-bill on 11.06. 2011 19:29
Noticed when tightening up the pinch bolt on the gear change lever it walks off the shaft, and remembered post by folks losing the lever on route.
So put the lever on without pinch bolt, slipped a small round file down the hole to mark the shaft, removed the lever and filed a grove in the shaft with a bit bigger file, only made a groove where the pinch bolt goes not all the way around. Shaft is quite soft so go steady with the file
Thinking this will give the bolt a little bit of hold on the shaft, used a new bolt as the old one was waisted a bit where it had been fouling the shaft as it was screwed in.
Time will tell

G'day Bill,
sounds like your bolt hole is too close to the shaft (after market lever?), both mine clear by a little. A good remedy for your problem though. Just shows the little tweaks we do to keep'em on the road.
Cheers

Yep - you got it Muskrat, replacement lever, it's also not straight but that's for another day.
The lever that came with the bike is worse though, little thing with big crank in it.
Also managed to get the gear lever to return to neutral after changing down (still does it occasionally but will wear in I think) put two gaskets on the outer cover to give the pawl a little less hold
