Title: stamped nbrs on casing ??

I have a 1954 engine nbr ca7 837  but underneath this  is another stamped number  ERS 1176 or maybe BRS not sure can anyone spread some light-- please see piccie.

I have a set of casings with the same, I have been advised by members on this forum it stands for "Engine Replacement Service" If you blew up your cases BSA would send out new ones to you.

Would this affect the year/date of the engine,will it have different internals,or would they have replaced like for like,or is it just the casings.  ;)

I'll guess BSA replaced like for like. 

Don't we all just wish there was still a BSA Engine Replacement Service that would send out new crankcases for around 40 GBP?

scroll down to nearly the bottom left side of page to  "exchange scheme" ,you will see a good explanation of this service,oh and some really good prices.   I can still remember when you got 240 pennies to a pound,my pocket money used to be 6d, i'll just get me coat.

Very interesting price lists.  Complete "A" series engine for 44 GBP.  Using a UK inflation calculator,  amounts to a new engine at 887 GBP in today's money. I'd do it.

The chat here reminds me of when I was a young lad in the early 60s.  Each summer I would make a trip to Armoury Road to get bits for my home built RGS lookalike.  The BSA people were so friendly and helpful.  One time I had had a D/S main outer move in the case and I took it along.  They gave me a matching pair of new cases, stamped with my old numbers (and no ERS stamping) for the price of a crankcase half.  It was so easy to keep a BSA in 100% trim on those days.  Their replacement crank service, regrind and all shells, cost £4 15s.  Often I'd go to Eddie Dows, who was only a bit north of Birmingham, and get some of his drool kit.  Good times!
