hi seems like a daft question, but having purchased my a10 as a basket case, i am looking at the oil seal holder and wondering which way up the seal goes in. can any one advise?

Very good question! an answer that I too eagerly await for. Unfortunately my seals are in and leaking like B****r. They were brand new seals and brand new fork stanchions. I wish I had asked before fitting and completeing job. Unfortunately untill I strip the front end down again I cant tell you at this moment in time which way is the 'wrong' way.

In general the open side of the seal ( the side with the spring in it ) faces the oil, this allows oil to exert pressure to the seal forcing the sealing lip onto the shaft ( fork stantion in this case )
there are exception such as when the seal is employed to keep dirt out rather than grease/oil in

Thanks Bill I owe you a pint. Next question i guess is how to apply pressure to the exposed side of the seal to push it into the holder and against the stop. Any suggestions? and thanks again for your help. Regards Huddie

Hi Huddie,
See if you have a socket with an outside diameter just slightly less than the inside diameter of the oil seal holder.
I use an old cover from the rear suspension unit of a plunger model. It needed reducing slightly in diameter but only took a couple of minutes with a file.
Unfortunately, not everybody has one of these to hand but a suitable socket will do the job ok.
BTW, dont hold the fork legs directly in the vice to remove the oil seal holders. They are liable to be squeezed out of shape. Clamp the brackets that hold the mudguard bridge.

The BSA manual says to put a couple of winds of string around the threads to stop oil leaking from the bottom of the holders.
In the old days we used hemp for that kind of thing, maybe its worth putting a bit of PTFE tape on the theads to be sure, dont forget to wind in in the direction of the thread.

I couldn't see the point of this because the holders would then over flow when they filled up. And in any case, If I had had my A10s back then in the sixties, the Hemp would have been smoked! *lol*

Glad to see you got your forks built up again.
Yes, it is possible for the oil to weep passed the threads of the oilseal holders. That was the reason for using the hemp. However, moving with the times, I use a dab of silicon sealant on the threads.
Please don't tell the purists.

An O-ring at the base of the threads works just fine.
