Hi Gents... (and any Ladies..)

Just looking for some reassurance and recommended supplier....

I recently purchased [a very nice in my opinion] 1958 Super Rocket - which had had a complete engine rebuild.

Unfortunately when I got home from last outing there was some oil on engine - which was unusual as she has been oil tight  for approx first 400 miles... on close inspection I found rocker oil feed pipe had sheared just above T connection to each side of engine  *sad2* but there wasn't that much oil over engine, as the pipes were still making contact & in-line - at least when stationary.

I've taken tappet covers off and there is a dampness in there (of oil) - and engine was sounding ok so I'm hoping the pipe broke close to home and no damage has been done.

So questions please....

1. Is there a lot of oil pumped to rockers ? If so then it appears that not much was lost and/or it happened close to home - as there wasn't much spilt/lost on bike.

2. any recommended supplier - I've searched the net and found Supreme Motorcycles and Burton Bike Bits - both closed today - so I'll ring them on Monday for a new part.

Try Draganfly (see website), they seem to have nearly everything & are very helpful.
Very little oil is usually up in the rocker boxes as the supply is from the return side of the pump.

G'day Mick,I think I know what you mean??
 Can't you just cut and re-solder the pipe together, and if necessary add a (longer)rubber joiner??

Don't use soft solder on this pipe, always silver solder.

thanks Gents...

Unfortunately the break is very close to the T section.... so I could maybe make a new connection there and extend pipe... (noting Silver solder required).  I will talk to the dealers on Monday.

             Drill out the broken piece of tube and fit either the dressed end of the existing tube or replace it with new copper.

Ok - I will have a go at this.... the original pipe appears to be 'brazed' as all brass in appearance at joints - but I'll assume similar melting point to silver solder so I can tackle with a small blow torch  *smiley4*

update... I obtained new piece of copper pipe, and formed to shape. Then took to local garage to silver solder each end (oil union pieces at rockers and sump), as I couldn't get enough heat with my small blow lamp.

The chap there had a very good idea, and I wonder if this is why my pipe failed in first instance? ie. form a small loop of copper pipe so this helps eliminate vibration/movement between oil tank and engine.

So, should a loop like this have been in place in first instance ? I do have an old manual and the diagram doesn't show this - but it's a very good idea for me.... as the engine and oil tank/frame are moving/vibrating at different rate ?

The rubber sleeve should cancel any vibes, but the loop is a good call

The early pipe was a one piece to the oil tank but was modified to the two piece set up with the rubber section.
Probably because of ongoing fractures.

yeah , but try buying the bits separately, did it but complex!

 Trev, Silver solder Question, What silver % is best option, drilled the guy at hardware for info, but I had some 5% so used that, bit of a mission tho'.
I bought a bottom banjo from Draganfly, and had to solder in my pipe(what was left of it)

Yes the one that fractured pipe was a single piece of copper. It had a rubber sleeve around it when it run along frame.

I spoke to draganfly today (very helpful). He suggested I simply use two pieces of copper and join with a rubber pipe section... which is what I'll do (and maybe I'll form a coil as well if I can bend to the diameter I want).

All straight forward stuff when you know !  so many thanks for input and guidance.

            Not sure of the % of my supply of silver solder. It was "donated" to me some years ago by a mate.
It is the silvery coloured type, not the brassy type.

Mick,
              It's probably not necessary to put a loop in the feed pipe.
The rubber section in the vertical section should do the trick nicely.

                  The hardware had 2% & 15%, which I noted looked obviously more silver, but it's glued now with the 5%  so will see how it goes, should be ok with a flexy bit
