I'm not too happy that should I leave my bike unattended any goomer could just jump on
and kick her in the guts & ride off into the sunset...
so I was thinking about putting a HIDDEN switch onto the Maggy earth...
so that the maggy would be earthed all the time = no go
& when deactivated would run back up to the cutout switch on the handle bars...
Is this a good idea? *idea* or any better suggestions? *dunno*
cheers WozzA

Lots of people do this. Problem is, anyone who knows Mags will cut the kill wire and drive away. If I'm going to leave a bike, I put a big fat chain through the wheels.
-
Yeah I use a chain on my other bike when left for a long time,
as well as it's got a ignition key lock & alarm
I was thinking more about when left whilst paying for petrol etc.. *????*
-
I use the steering lock for short term parking like nipping into a shop or paying for fuel.
For longer term parking I use a lock and chain thinking that the more visible approach is a deterrent. I also use the steering lock under these circumstances.
You could also swap the plug leads over. That would also work.

'Swap the plug leads' What a good idea!
-
Hey Graybeard,
Glad you liked that idea. Up here for thinking....down there for stinking!!
Beezageezauk.

just take off a plug cap and put it in your pocket, visual put off too
-
Only trouble is I've cut the left lead too short to reach the right plug *conf*

A trend these days is to cover your # plate and ride off without paying *eek*.
If you have a throttle lock screw, use it.
Most under the age of 50 wouldn't know how to start it anyway. *smile*
-
If for a short time like nipping in shop ect, A padlock on the clutch lever and round the handle bars while in the pulled in / engaged position ?.
-
Thanks for your replys guys... I think I'll just put a sign on the seat stating
"This bike is powered with Turnipdynamics, electron's with holes, & gamma ray protons" *eek*
ride at own risk.. *smile* *roll*

I've always worked on the theory that someone can steal my bike provided I never find out who they are !
Unfortunately this is one of those things that you really cant do much about, if some scumbag is intent on nicking your bike there is not much you can do.
I'm always pretty carefull where I leave my bike, for instance if I stop at a cafe for a coffee I park my bike right in front of the window where I can see it. I never park a bike in a street and walk away and leave it. I guess I am lucky living in the country rather than a city, less chance of a bike disappearing.

Years ago I had a Blue Heeler (cattle dog) that rode on the tank with me everywhere, even bush bashing. She stayed with the bike, no chain needed, and no one could come within 6 foot of her. She did over 30,000 miles on the '51 and 50,000 on the rHond whore, only fell off once *eek*.

I fitted pocket paging alarms to all my bikes that were daily rides.
Some had to be powered independantly with a little 12V battery worked a treat.
Quite a few would be thieves had a long wait in casulty to think better of knicking my motorcycles.
I also used one of those D locks some times simply because it fitted really well.
A friend put a small padlock on the chain so the bike went 3' forward and stopped dead, usually on top of the would be thief and a few of these ended up with a long wait in casulty as well.
It is amazing just how much damage a motorcycle boot can do to the hand of a would be thief as you accidently stomp on it while trying to lift the bike from on top of him.

I’ve got a steering lock in my top yoke that does for short stops. For any length of time I run a large chain and lock around the back wheel. I wouldn’t really expect anybody who doesn’t know what they are about (i.e. kids and other chancers) to try starting the bike, or fooling with the lights. What concerns me more would be that if I were leaving the bike routinely in the same place someone more knowledgeable might consider helping themselves to parts – most appreciably the tank and the speedo (I have no nacelle mine just sits on an alloy plate held under a for top nut).
I have been considering bolting/wiring those down more securely somehow.

I forgot about the stearing lock in the tripple tree.. DOH *problem*
I'll have to get a key for it now.. coz I dont have one.. *dunno*
I also went with a hidden switch to earth the maggy as above...
thank you for your replys gentlemen... *yeah*

I had a Feridax lockable twist-grip in my box of spares but no key for it. I searched the net and found a discussion about changing the lock barrel on these jobbies. I discovered that the key number is stamped into the metal on the area where the two halves come together. I found a bloke on Ebay who sells these old vehicle type keys and ordered two for six pounds including postage. So, if I need to leave my bike I can now lock the throttle and the steering, plus add my meaty padlock and chain.

Poses the ? Why stop. I'd much rather riding than eating, drinking or shopping. It can all wait till I get home and set the bear traps. LOL.
If they really want it they'll get it. Look at todays cars with all there whiz bang security. 5 minutes on the net and have a way to get around it.
Don't wash your bike and nobody wants it. Go to the pub with a slashing looking date and you'll be fighting them off all night. ;)
Cheers

An older member than me ( yes it is possible ) used to fit a ford trembler coil to his bikes with the output wire bolted to the underside of the seat .
Worked well in he days when the would be thief would ride the bike away.
The first time they put foot to ground while sitting on the seat WHAM and your leg flops out from under you usually caausing the bike to fall on top of the crook.

Don't leave the bike like this for a long time though. If you forget, you will wonder why it won't start!
