Title: A10 Eng to Frame mounting bolts question
Post by: scotty on 02.12. 2008 19:53
Greetings all

I've just returned to dry land (I work at sea) and my post box was full of BSA goodies ordered prior to my departure.

Needless to say I will be giving the 55 gold flash some attention. I'v got the frame back from the shop/powder coaters and I'm dry fitting the crankcase etc to make sure all is good before the real assembly.

The engine to frame bolt set that I received has one rather long nut included (in the attached photo its the horizontal nut/bolt at top of pic).
Any suggestions as to where this nut should be fitted ? None of my manuals show it.
I suspect it may be at the front of the engine below the dynamo or in that general area?
Does it matter which side of the engine the bolt is secured?
When I stripped down the bike there was very little holding the engine to the frame (even the swing arm pin was a piece of all thread!).

Any advise greatly appreciated

Cheers
Scotty

Your on the right track Scotty, It's the bottom of the two front mounting bolts, it's longer because it catches the exhaust pipe mounts as well as being at wider part of the front down tubes.
Good luck with the rebuild

All the best Bill

Ah, Bill, you are correct about the longer of the front mounting through-bolts, but I don't believe that was what Scotty was referring to. The problem is, I, too, do not know why there is a long, partially round, nut laid horizontally in the photo. However, I am sure that as soon as I know, I am going to want one.

The sleeve nut is fitted to the engine plate to crankcase stud on the left side adjacent to the generator top. If you look at original photos of A series bikes, you can see it. Part number is 67-1292.

Ahhh....of course  *ex*

Thanks for pointing that out Trev.

I can see the cylindrical/ nut clearly on some of the photos in the BSA Twins A7&A10 Gold Portfolio book.

I guess with the generator in place, the longer spacer / nut makes life easier.

Thanks for the collective wisdom.

Cheers

Feeling kinda dumb because, on looking at my bike, that long nut is right where it is supposed to be and it was just last August that I put it there myself. I was right about one thing, however, now that I know what it is, I definately want it.
