Title: MOT exemption Pre 1960 ,taxing online
Post by: Duncan R on 06.08. 2013 11:46
Hi All,

For info in case anyone else is having problems.

Just received a tax reminder this morning and tried to tax online but the site stated that a MOT was needed (I still have a current MOT from last year) System also said no current MOT! I phoned DVLA and the nice lady said as it was the first time I had applied for the tax since the excemption rules it was knocking it back but next year will be OK. She told me to pop to the PO with V5 and insurance cert. and get it there. A form C112 can be filled in to declare excemption from MOT tests and the disc will be issued.

Cheers

Duncan

Hi Duncan, thats strange I did mine online without any probs but after a period of sorn maybe that was the difference having put a bit of time since the last MOT running out and retaxing . The mysteries of DVLC are never endding Regards BobH.

No problems for me either. Bunch of wasters out there ... what is the point of the tax disc now anyway? They have all the insurance info immediately available on the MID.

I had the same problem back in June with my 1938 Wolseley. I had an on-line reminder to renew my tax and the system rejected the application due to no MOT.
When I spoke to DVLA, apparently if you have a current MOT which is due to expire before the new disc starts the system will cancel the application. The answer is to wait until the MOT expires and then re-apply - it worked for me. You can go into a Post Office with the V5 and insurance after receiving your reminder and they can hit the "MOT exempt" button on their system - probably after you have filled in the aforementioned Form C112.
You have to remember that this is a government IT system which has probably been installed after millions of taxpayers money being paid to outside consultants so it is not expected to work. I am amazed it was even ready on time.

BTW the definition of a consultant is someone who borrows your watch and then tells you what the time is.

Does this mean that everyone has to fill in an MoT exemption form at some stage?

And until you fill one in, you need an MoT?

Don't think so. The DVLA guy I spoke to said it was a quirk of the system and only occurred when trying to tax an exempted vehicle on line which had a current MOT.
It would have been nice if the consultants who designed it had anticipated it and it would have saved thousands of calls to DVLA. Although, thinking about it, aren't the calls to DVLA premium rate calls - nice little earner. Or is it me being a tad cynical.

No don't think so just there system needs to not have a current mot registered for it to allow you to tax online. I certainly haven't completed any paperwork relating to exempting from MOT and I did mine online, regards BobH.

Well I didn't, and I did mention the MOT to the PO lady who just said no that's fine and issued the disc

I think that was the issue because the current MOT is still valid, hopefully next year I won't have that problem. Like Jim said, the massive fees these so called consultants get you think they would sort that out - car, bike reg before 1960,no MOT needed, surely it can't be that difficult.

Got my disc at the PO no problem

I taxed my A10 a couple of days ago online. I've had it on a SORN for the last year but that was a bit of a pain when the sun was shining the birds were singing and the bike had that "ride me" look on it's face.
At first I ticked the box for no MOT 'cos it hasn't got one, but that was kicked into touch, so I ticked the box to say it had one and it went through ok.  I'm assuming that when the software checks the MOT database and there is no current MOT recorded it does a loop to check the age of the vehicle.
I'm also assuming I'm not going to get a letter through the post regarding a false declaration....... *eek*

There's more to this than meets the eye. If your bike or car is on its original registration number, has not been restored and on an age related plate it should be exempt. It your 1958 A10 has been re-registered it will need an MOT even if is declared as manufactured in 1958.

Not everything registered before 1960 is exempt, far from it.The rules are out there somewhere....

the bike I registered at the PO is a 59 Flash re registered in 86 and with age related plates, it came up on the PO computer as not needing an MOT
I'm happy

There was an interesting piece on this in last Month's BSA Star magazine. Seems to be confusion even at DVLA... surely not...

Now I'm of the same mind as Bill  but still wonder what will come up on police computer screens and realistically as I don't get stopped very often if ever these days ( fingers firmly crossed ) the only way I'll find out is to go and talk to our local "Mr Plod " but think I'll wait til end of October just incase Iget a chance for a few more rides this year, then worse case senario I get her MOT'D next year, BobH.

I did my 1954 at the Post Office after the DVLA did a good job of sorting out it's DOB. The Post Office taxed it without an MOT and informed me that I will be able to do it on line next time. Job done.
