Hello all, a while ago I bought a dynamo from a jumble for the bike I'm building up but it didn't have the end cap, or the connections to it. I'm planning to try it on the bike before I do anything to it (aside from tidying those frayed wires!) but am at a bit of a loss as to connecting it?
I've been looking at various manuals and have got thoroughly confused!
I'm guessing that the blue lead to the right hand terminal should be 'D' (but should the field coil also be attached there?)
And the other one next to it is 'F'?

The dreaded Miller dynamo.
Hopefully the person who operated on yours has brought out the correct pair of field wires, the Miller has four field leads, two for the field and two for the resistance. One of the field wires has to be connected to earth if you are going to use a Lucas or electronic regulator.
It looks like it has been set-up for a Bosch type regulator which earths the field at the regulator.
If you intend using the Miller regulator you are in trouble as I assume that the field coil has either been replaced or the resistance leads cut off, as is usual.
Try moving the field lead from the brush lead terminal and connect it to the earth brush. Join the two output terminals and apply a voltage. Hopefully the dynamo will motor in the correct direction, if it runs in reverse, reverse the field connections.

Hi Trev, its a Miller dynamo then? That at least explains why I was finding the Lucas manual confusing!! I'll check tomorrow but I'm fairly certain that the body itself is marked Lucas, and numbered E3LM.....will also try your suggestions....thank you, Rob

Went and had a quick look before work this morning...its definitely a Lucas body but fitted with a Miller end?
Looks like I've got a special Mucas dynamo!!
The field coil only has 2 wires....none have been cut off, one has a green id tag on it...
As to the regulator, I have a podtronics one on my other A10, 12v, -ve earth, that works fine and was planning to try on this bike.
Didn't have time to try your suggestion Trev but will later and see what happens...

No, Richard, never tried, attaching pictures here is about the limit of my abilities! That pic of me is approx. 1980 and in the UK we only had black, white (and pink!) film then! Your version definitely an improvement!
And dynamo update....I tried your suggestion Trev, and it spun fine albeit in the wrong direction, reversed the field wires and it obliged ! Its now wired as in Brians picture so hopefully something will happen when I start it up.
Did come across a snag though, once I'd fiddled it into place I found that it would no longer turn at all.....taking it back out and apart again I realised that the end part isn't indexed to the body and it had turned a little jamming the armature...
So I filed a small groove in the body, re aligned it and then drilled a hole down the groove and put in a c lock pin....now seems ok and have fitted a belt kit so even if it seizes again hopefully the belt will just break....with luck will be starting the motor over the weekend and hope to see the odd volt or two oozing out of it....
