Title: Which way round?

Hi everyone. When I removed the clutch (4 spring swinging arm 1954)I didn't make a proper note of what this (attached pix) is and does. I think it is a spacer that fits behind the rollers on the clutch centre bearing, but it has a copper face and a steel face. Which side faces the rollers? There is no reference to it in Haynes. :-\

Just by research, I would say it's a Triumph/BSA 57-3931, as shown here:

But I read elsewhere where it said it's for a 3-spring Triumph clutch. On the other hand, here it is again shown with a BSA B50 4-spring clutch.

I believe it is a part that was common to several different clutches. The reason it is not in your Haynes manual is because the '54 swingarm did not use that type of bearing in the stock 6-spring clutch. I am guessing when I say that the copper should be up against the chain basket, but it makes sense to me to have the hrad material as the bearing surface.

Thank you! I'm sure that must be right. I think its bronze, not copper, and having cleaned and polished it the very slight wear marks match that conclusion.

It looks like you have a much later 4 spring type used on the A50/65's.

I've only had the bike for 2 years so I'm  not sure of the full list of modifications it has had although I do have all the receipts for work and replacement parts since 1994 when it had its first restoration. It has an SRM clutch pressure plate, and I've just had the gearbox renovated by SRM hence the re-assembly .....
