Title: Export tank?
Post by: flashblack on 21.02. 2009 19:59
Hi all,
can anyone identify this tank, i bought it at shepton mallet years ago and used it on the A10 for years. I often wondered what it was off, A65 maybe? It has no badge indents or knee grip screw holes, but has the usual BSA central mounting hole.
       Any thoughts would be interesting.
                                       Cheers, Richie.

Hi Flashblack, took the liberty to crop your image. & remember you can edit your own posts by using 'Modify'. Sorry, no idea about the tank origin.

Hi richie,
BSA Fleetstar tank is apparently  identical a Catalina tank but has no badge indents.
They were chromed, and had really odd painted panelling.

The very last pre-oil in frame Firebirds had a badgeless export tank too. My moneys on a Fleetstar.
Cheers,
Iain

Hi Iain
I see what you mean about the strange panelling, whatever my tank is off i think it sits quite nicely on the A10 so i will keep it as an alternative to the standard one.
    cheers for looking,
                             Richie.

Having compared a 1970 B25 export (Starfire) and a 1970 Firebird scrambler tank, I can say with a fair amount of certainty that they are identical to each other (except that the export B25 tank is not plated) and differ from the late A7/10 small tank only in that they lack badge recesses and the fuel taps have been relocated.

B40 tanks for the military & off road variants were also sans knee grips & badges as was a few supplied to the plod.
The outer shape is the same pressing as for Gold Stars but the bottom pressing is quite different ( although it will fit).
I seem to remember that the A10 spitfire also had a plan tank with decals, no badge & no kneepads.

The bloke who sold it to me thought it could be A10 spitfire, but in the twenty years since i bought it, i`ve never seen another one anywhere exactly the same
Still the search goes on, and who knows maybe one day.......
