Title: Spoke Length
Post by: petetherev on 15.04. 2015 21:09
Hello,  Has anyone had problems with Stainless Steel spokes supplied by Wessell.  I finally got round to purchasing spokes and rims for my 53 (54) swinging arm Tiger 100 engined Gold Star.  No problem with the front wheel but the rear wheel spokes supplied under the Wessell part no. WW37029 as suitable for A & B series with a 19” rim and a QD hub are 8 3/16” long.  The one I removed are 7 15/16” long. As far as I know they are the original.  I have owned the bike since 1967. I have also found reference to the OEM Pt no. 65-5544 being 7 15/16” long. The retailer said that he had sold a number of these sets and not had any complaints.  My thoughts are that it may be a packaging problem.  Can anyone throw any light on this please.
Regards
Pete

G'day Pete.
Big W strikes again!! If they won't take them back you'll have to find a wheel builder to roll another 1/4" of thread on them, then cut off the excess.
Cheers

Hello All, I think I have discovered what the problem is.  Half is a manufacturing/packaging problem, the other half is due to differences in the rim profile and some difference in the depth of the spoke dimples the spokes should have been 206mm total length (8.125" near as makes no difference) As I said earlier the ones supplied to me were 210mm (8.250") total length. The difference in being able to tighten the spokes or not I hope.  I will find out when the replacements come.

Hello All, rear wheel now build.  Replacement spokes were slightly shorter about 1/16"  and the thread was slightly longer, the spoke protruded through the nipple by about the same, when screwed finger tight. This all added up to the correct length.
