As a result of the rear wheel blowout I had last night its brought l this to the forefront of my mind. 3 questions which I'd like your thoughts on.
I've got AVON 350X 19 on the rear end (3.25 avon roadmaster on front )both have plenty of tread but is 8 yrs old both on its 3 rd tube , ,felt they tubes, should be changed don't know if they deteriorate but felt they would. I like the idea of more rubber on the rear end particularly now I'll be riding with a pillion .
First question does anyone know how the bike would respond to keeping the existing front but using the Mitras 400x 19 on the back .question 2 , That's assuming that the front isn't past it being 8 yrs old when is a tyre past it's user date
question 3 , are there any EFECTIVE self sealing fluids available for tubed tyres ,thanks for your help, Bobh

quite a few I think, never used one except to fix a wheel barrow wheel, it worked for about a month.
Now the thing I've heard is that once it's in your tyre or tube, if it has to do it's job then that's the end of your tyre/tube as the result is a sticky mess.
This is hearsay as far as I'm concerned as I've no experience, but bet someone here has

I'd expect better steering with 3.50 section rear, than 4.00.
3.50 is not "too small" for carrying a pillion.
Inflate to around 30 psi.
8 years might be a bit old for tyres.

Don't think self sealing fluids are made to work properly in tubes, only tubeless tires..
The sealing area (thickness) of a tube is only a fraction of a tire and they might even stick together when it sips out at start.
But I'm just guessing...:-)
-
8 years would be well past their use by date in my books.
You probably won't notice much difference going from 3.50 to 4.00 just a tad more counter steering.
I have never had much luck with puncture repair stuff in tubes. And adding 1/2 pound of unsprung weight not to mention low speed imbalance doesn't sound good to me.
Cheers

A sealant such as Punctureseal, previously known as Ultraseal, will not seal tubed tyres. What it will normally do in event of a puncture, is to give a controlled deflation. In other words, the tyre will deflate but will probably give you time to stop under control.
I have no connection with Puncturesafe, although have used it satisfactorily for many years with tubeless tyres, & use it in all my tubeless tyred bikes.

Many thanks everyone, from this obvious they are past it so new ones asap re the sealant it is what I had heard and with this info will think about it ,from that experience 2 nights ago I'd think even a couple of secs extra control can make the difference but been lax about them, before I've always done such a high mileage that the tyre never got a chance to get old whereas over the past few years the mileage as been very low.
Since the 400 rear seems a no go what about for some suggestions for modern replacements, it would be a great help, cheers Bobh.

I've got Avon AM26's on both of mine. 100/90/19 front and back on the plunger. 100/90/19 front 110/90/18 rear on the cafe. Luv'em.
Cheers

Any time I have to change a tire with liquid sealant installed, whether tube or tubeless (and as others have stated, it doesn't really work with tubes) the customer is charged an extra 15 minutes labor for the cleanup of the floor, wall, tire machine, etc. Absolutely hate this stuff, and "balance beads" are not much better.
-
Hi Gents, many thanks for all info on this. I've finally bitten the bullet and settled on AM26's and also have found a source which may be helpful to others. A firm called "tyre tech" 08003579757- got me a 100x90x 19 for £56 inc vat which I thought was a great price. With tubes x 2 and rim tapes total £98 del tomorrow.
Locally I was being quoted £87 just for the tyre AND 3 DAYS TO GET IT so glad I told him where to put it ! Hope this may be of help, regards BobH. *smiley4* oh ready to ride over the weekend yephee *smile* *smile*

I am with Musky, where is all the liquid sealer going to go inside the tire, except round and round. Or when at speed if it stays in one place from centrifugal forces, and what balance of the wheel and tire does it throw off ? ?
-
The imbalance would only be at low speed 0-30 or so, after that centrifugal force would even it out. Hard braking or acceleration (won't happen on our A's *whistle*) will upset it.
