Just giving them a false sense of security. We only have to win the last three.
We all know they sent all their best sporting stock out here 200 years ago.

I'm more for the Footie and we have an Aussie on the books at Newcastle - Curtis Good

but Cricket does have it's characters I'll admit.
Thinking of big Freddie Trueman whose son or daughter married Raquel Welshs's son or daughter (can never remember which), anyway the families met up for a barbie at Fred's, Raquel noticing Fred bending over to turn the steaks said " my what a large ar** you've got Fred", to which Fred replied in broad Yorkshire "I lass taks a big hammer to knock in a big nail"

Man cannot live by BSA alone Brian , we all need a little culture now and again, not to mention a few beers watching the grass grow etc . I've got more time now so this will be the first ashes series for some years where I can actually spend the time getting back into it again , trying desperately to get number 1 son to treat me to a days cricket at one of the venues ,He's not playing /paying yet but I'll get there !! At one time I went to Old Trafford, Southport and Liverpool (these are lovely small county grounds with good atmosphere and beer  ) at least twice a year on corporate days out ,but not any more I'm afraid to say. Looking forward to continuing the banter with Wozza, providing we win of course, cheers Bob

Speedway, finally someone who talks sensibly....................................

Some of my best years was when I was involved with speedway. Rode solo's and what we called "stockbikes", our motocross bikes with the brakes disconnected.

Post by: bsa-bill on 14.07. 2015 08:11
Yes I like speedway, 15 miles from Berwick Bandits, don't go regular these days (pension restraints  *sad2*)
I remember my first visit - such a great decision to stand at a corner. *eek*

Quite a few riders from down under rode for the Bandits in their early years - Roy Williams - Alan Paynter (sp) to mention just a couple, - home grown riders - probably the best Murray Walker ( m/cycle business in Newcastle) and never to be forgotten Dougie Wyre.
Lots of east European and Scandinavian riders now tho

I used to love going to Sydney Showground to watch them. I swung on a chair once at Moruya on a wet track. After the first turn I couldn't see a thing so I just stayed out there. I was told most of the race my head was only inches from the back wheel of another rig. We won.
Shame we don't get as much action down here anymore.

Hmmmmm. I was over at Ipswich last Friday watching my fave team performing away from home. About the worst you could hope for - most heats being all over between the first and second turn of the first lap. And my team being on the receiving end of a right good thumping to boot.

Not having english as my first language (or lack of intelligence), I don't understand anything mentioned above....

Johnny, it's quite a simple game really:
There are 2 teams, one team goes in, (sorry, forgot to mention that before anyone goes in the captains toss off to decide who goes in first), well then as each player goes out he bats until he gets out and the other team get closer to going in. So when they're all out the other team goes in and bats until they all go out. Then the bowling team comes back in and tries to bowl the other team out, so when each one of them is out the other team comes in and they bat until they go out.
etc, etc...
They do all this over a five day period, and the whole of England and the whole of Australia are completely transfixed by the whole thing. Then....  They do it again four times.
At the end of it the winner gets a tiny jug full of ashes.
 ;) Jools

 cricket
been in oz more than 15 years.. we have only worked one rule of cricket...something about getting the ball over the rope... to get a point..i have always had some greasy parts to clean up...so never stuck around much for that...
AFL is another...total mystery...cant tackle anybody...always pulling on others shirts...if you have an issue with another player...why not just wind up and belt him...tugging someone's jumper???   I always covered my kids eyes when I seen that...
I guess that why hockey always seems so civilised...only 2 can go at it...3rd man in is out of the game...one player hits the ground..the other is declared ...the winner...and the game goes on...
rugby and afl blues always look soo girly...trying to pull each other clothes off.....??
then soccer...don't even have to hit each other...just make sure the ref is watching...fall on the ground and flop around like a fresh caught fish...

I'm with you Jools re hockey. My youngest daughter started playing it 5 years ago when she was 14; now in the Western Australian Diamonds (WA) senior team. Like all the other dads, you have to drive your girl there so I have seen a lot of (high level) hockey since Sophie started goaklkeeping.

WA is the home base of AIS hockey for the men (Kookaburras) and the women (Hockeyroos), so we are treated by being able to wander into the hockey stadium (no charge), and watching the best players in the country every week.  It's an exciting game to watch.

My pet sport is squash. I started playing socially at the age of 21, to get fit for riding enduros. The squash continued long after the enduros ceased! I have been playing for the last 38 years, and relying on cunning to make up for the loss of speed.

As for cricket; ain't it grand! One of the two great legacies from our British heritage; the other one (arguably) the Westminster parliamentary system.

Richard

Like Richard I like squash ,played until 18 mths ago when the knee let go , as a youff I used to lacross , they couldn't get enough volunteers (idiots ) from the brothers Gramma school to make a team so I became a pupil for Saturdays only ! Great game for maiming people, the ball is bloody heavy ,solid rubber and that sure teaches you not to take your eye of it ! and you never, never hit an opponent with the cross (oh yeah ) sometimes the field used to look like the somme on a bad day ,all good fun . I seem to remember that the Canadian Indians started the game and used a solid hickory ball ,that would have been erm ...interesting, Bob.

It's clear the dastardly poms must have taken advantage of our clean fresh youthful cricket team.
By plying them with strong drink and introducing them to wicked women, they have removed their competitive edge.
