Starting with covers off
« on: 24.03. 2022 20:14 »
Winter in Canada is finally ending so time to get working on the bike (55 SA GF). I currently have the outer primary and timing covers off and do not really want to button them all up if I have troubles and have to start dismantling everything. (Not had this bike running yet so dont know what I am in for!)

Are there any issues in seeing whether it fires up with the outer primary and timing covers removed, just for a couple of minutes to check it is running OK. ?
Cheers

G'day David.
No probs with the primary cover off. The outer timing cover off will make a mess of oil but otherwise OK.

Thanks Muskrat,
I only intend to make sure it starts up OK for a minute or two.
Spent the (bloody cold) winter reading the forum, Nicholson's book and Bacons as well. Now time to start fettling.
I suspect I will be posting here quite a lot in the weeks to come!

With an original Engine it is no problem a s Muskrat said.

But with a needleroller confersion you need the the cover for the conrod oil feed.
Otherwise the shells run dry.

And whatever you do, don't check the tension of the dynamo chain with your finger with the engine running...

Only the SRM type. Mine (the Cafe) has the feed straight from the pump!

Last time I did that there was a cascade from the timing bush. With the cover on, the oilpump cavity rapidly fills with oil, so the bush is pretty well immersed on the pump side. But of course, my motor has a bit of lift on that bush, but still runs fine. Prepare for a bit of a mess!!

Additional. If the motor is "dry", the big ends need all the oil they can get. Priming the crank from the PRV cavity is another trick. Ted's suggestion  (later post) is a good plan, but under the circumstances a greased gasket on the timing cover may be worth a sacrifice rather than risking a poor oil flow to the crank from the bush  in the absence of the cover. Primary chain can have a dose from the oilcan, but again cover on will keep the oil off you and the rest of your valuables.

Yes Swarfy there will be a mess and shows how much oil is "wasted" escaping from the bush and not going to the crank. I had 8 thou clearance in the bush/crank! Really surprised the big ends looked so good!

Why not put the covers on with just a couple of screws and no gaskets.

Considering the original design, blocking or reducing the size of the keyhole (the vent for the oil pump cavity) should reduce the rate of oil loss from the bush, so theoretically more is directed to the crank..... Waddya think?

Now why on earth did I not think of that. I was focussed on not ruining a gasket and did not think of something so simple as not fitting one for the first start.
That is what I will do.
