Early A10 clutch lever

Hello all,

1951 plunger A10 - clutch lever broken at the clamp. I need a replacement but I can't find anything that exactly matches having search google, obvious UK suppliers and ebay. Here is the required spec: 7/8" pivot centre, 7/8" clamp, plain end, no adjuster, mounting area for Lucas horn/dipswitch, single screw clamp - see photo for a visual.

I could go for a separate lever and horn/dipswitch but I've only just got the bike and I don't want to start losing the original feel if I don't have to. Plus it seems a waste to get a new horn/dipswitch, mess with wiring, etc when it's the clutch lever that's broken! Also the brake lever has the kill switch mounted to the back of the clamp so if I can keep the original-style clutch lever/switch set up then everything remains in harmony!

I can't be the only one with levers like this so it surprises me that there are no obvious sources of replacements.

I could try and repair the broken clutch lever - I guess it would need a delicate bit of welding and then some finishing to get a good fit over the bar but I worry that welding across the snapped bit will effectively increase the circumference of the clamp so it wouldn't tighten down properly. Has anyone done this sort of fix before?

On a related note - what's the easiest way to remove a handlebar grip?

1. if there's a hole in the end of the grips use an airline if you have one (blow them off, air line in one hole finger over other)
2. knife !!
3. if 1 or 2 is not available you'll need to push them off. pulling on the end of them just tightens the rubber onto the bar

Removing grips: brush petrol around the inner end of the grip, and twist it loose; then pull it off.

Haven't got a 376 carb body you'd like to swap have you?

Oooh - looks like just the ticket, Wozza. Unfortunately the only carb body I have is the one on the bike... How much would you want for the lever? Does anyone have a rough idea what postage costs from Aus to UK?

Wozza, clutch lever arrived yesterday. Fitted it as soon as I got in from work and took my maiden voyage across the garden - only about 6m but I couldn't resist!

Thanks again to you for offering up the part - and thanks to the forum members in general for being a great bunch of guys and girls. In line with Wozza's wishes I will offer up something free of charge when I start to amass a spares pile.

Next steps with the bike are to get a battery and insurance then I'm on the road! First journey will be to see the previous owner who made it a condition of sale that I take it back to him as soon as I have it on the road so he can see it going for the first time in 10 years.

Off to Birmingham now for the National Motorcycle Museum 30th anniversary open day. Should be a good one!

We are a GREAT bunch of blokes on this forum arnt we..   

Glad to see it's being used as it was intended to be... not just stashed away gathering dust.   
I bet there isn't too many BSA parts that have traveled around the world,
to return home & be put to good use after 60 odd years..
