Cam too badly damaged?
« on: 06.04. 2023 16:03 »
Hi guys.
I'm hoping for miracles but please check the pictures and tell me if this cam can be saved. It is from another A10 I'm gonna start building but was left stripped outside for about 20 years. It's very pitted, this is after I polished it.
Cheers

To me ,it looks like the hardening has flaked off, best wait for more informed opinion.

The camshaft is one of the most severely loaded parts of an engine - a fair loading without copious oil supply combined with the sliding motion of the follower over the cam. Years ago I used to do a fair bit of rebuilding of a popular Ford 6cyl diesel. Their camshafts were fine - but often destroyed by Ford's crappy cam followers. The latter were 'chilled' cast iron, but often contained a multitude of tiny blow holes in the casting. Whilst one might think they would hold oil, in fact they damaged the cam.
In your case Stu, in my view that cam is beyond use for similar reasons. Could be reground and hardened again, but surely a good second hand one would be cheaper? Which cam is it?

Be cautious if you regrind the cams, if you need to take much off they will bottom out and make the most awful clattering noise!

I'm assuming is for an A10, came in a box of bits with other a10 engine parts. I don't know if here's a code number on it, I'll have a closer look.

The camshaft is beyond use, it could be re-ground but new cams are readily available. Is there a part number in the drive end?

Definitely not one that I'd use. Good cams are available new and not too expensive.

suitable for the scrap bin sadly, check what cam you're after 356, 357, 334 ?
if the motors small journal keep to the milder cam options

no idea what post is like to your neck of the woods but may have one spare.
