Speedometer lubrication
« on: 08.11. 2025 11:02 »
I've got this old Smiths Chronometric speedo for the A10 which came with a load of spares that i bought.
I'm wondering what's the best oil to use for lubrication.
I've read WD40 is a no go but also read that watch or clockmakers lube is good. What about 3 in 1 oil?
The speedo works because i've tried it with a drill in reverse. I've had the bezel off, just with my bare hands amazingly, but must have been off before i tried.
Don't know what the previous owner did but he set the mileage and trip meter both at zero.
I've used the search button here and on the BSAOC forum.

According to Russel Smalley of 'Chronometrics' you should not attempt to lubricate the speedometer at all. Some parts of the mechanism rely on friction, particularly the trip and odometer rollers.

But have a close look at the axes from the Milecounter or Tripcounter. If they run dry and go hard to turn you damage the drivewheel. Juse only a half drop of Sewingmashineoil.  There is a small recess in the axle; oil it there.
