Cable making
« on: 14.04. 2026 18:14 »
As we all know, the cable clearance at the top of the carb is pretty tight on the A10.  I need new cables, and will like to change clutch and front brake as well.  I also have an Ariel (VH500) and a Matchless  (G5).  So I have plenty of need for cables....   I bought a single clutch cable for the Ariel, and it didn't fit....

So, long story short, I am thinking about buying a comprehensive kit that would let me make multiple cables.  Any recommendations?  Anything to watch out for?  Anyone been there and done that?   Last thing I want to do is spend a couple of hundred pounds on a kit that works for every Japanese bike under Sun, but won't fit british bikes.

Do they do kits? I've always order the components "loose" to get what's needed.
I bought a box of old and new cables (over 50) some years back off Ebay, and it's a great source of Imperial cable adjusters, barrel nipples and even cables to modify and use.
Shame birds nest tools are so expensive, but a centre pop does the same job.

I buy a cable kit from the local bike shop, availiable in light, med or heavy duty, nylon lined and supplied with a range of fittings that will fit most bikes. Priced between £12/£14.

If you've got a tight spot and need a sharp bend are the nylon lined cables the way to go? When I was building a T140 specail I used some metal pipe bends - they allowed a much sharper curve

Venhill cables do all sorts of kits and have training videos on their website.

Agree with Andrew;
Venhills have everything you need, including the "birdnesting" tool (for spreading the cable end) and cable cutters which give a beautiful clean cut.

It was the Venhill workshop kit at around £250 I was looking at.  Just a bit concerned everything will be metric, and not suitable for British bikes

But £150 for the bird cage/nest tool!  I'll be making my own one of them.

from a few years back.Those bespoke tools haven't got any cheaper in the meantime, but they're not a difficult 'make' and they give nice results. My ones, in a couple of sizes (for clutch/brake or throttle/ignition cables) are a bit heath robinson but they do the job.

I made my own birds nest tool, works well, not worth $300
