Eddie Dow Fork Dampeners
« on: 09.02. 2014 09:18 »
Hi,
Just wanted to know if anybody has used the Eddie Dow type fork dampeners and if they could comment on the improvement or otherwise. I am building a 1955 Shooting Star.

Regards

Andy

HI Andrew
Do a search on the forum. its been discussed lots of times before
Well worth doing in my opinion, You will need to change the oil type and amount in my experience
depending on personal preference and riding style

Hi I found them to work well on my SR and A7. I built my own using the drawings and instructions done by chaterlea25 on this forum page.

I have never seen the Dow spec forks before. Don't have them on the bsa but every other vintage fork I have rebuilt gets theses http://www.mikesxs.net/product/27-1086.html just turn down the OD to fit the British fork. Makes me feel better about cutting up the $60 dollar ones as compaired them the racetechs that they are a direct copy of. Works a treat!

A simple and effective way of improving the front forks.  In my opinion it is an essential "upgrade" to get the forks working to an acceptable standard.

Agree totally , prior to fitting after 10 miles of dipping when braking hard you felt knackered ,fitted similar via George prew , well worth the cost and safer , BobH.

Just to buck the trend I found no difference in the damping, just  them topping out. No bang as they travel upwards. Maybe the progressive springs would help  :!

Interesting.  I have found a slight tendency for the forks to 'top" but I have slightly shorter springs than standard although only by 1/4" or so.  I would have thought longer springs would make this situation worse?  Perhaps my 16 15/16 ths compared to the 16 11/16 ths previously posted may account for this?  I believe I found the diminution I have used way back in time from a 'reliable" source.  Can't recall what though.  Have heard mixed reports regarding progressive springs so have not bothered to change.  What's the consensus on progressive springs, if any?  ATB  Keith
