Rod brake switch operating link
« on: 14.04. 2009 18:42 »
I need to source a stop lamp switch operating operating link as used on rod operated rear brakes. The switch itself and the spring are readily available but nobody seems to stock the link. I have enquired at all the usual suspects. Have any of you got one fitted to your bike? If you have. could you please be kind enough to give me the dimensions so that I can fabricate one.

The link is BSA part number 42-9027 item 3 on the drawing. Thanks in advance for your help.

You will find that the link will depend on the spring you have. I make them out of 1/16" stainless steel strip 1/2" wide.
One bike has a length of 1 1/2" and the other 1". Drill 1/4" clearance hole in one end for clevis end and clearance hole in other end for spring wire. You can take a rough measurement for length with the spring hanging from the switch.
Near enough is good enough as you can pivot the link to take up the slack.
Radius the corners of the link and you will be happy with the result.

If your drilling stainless,Use a sharp drill with plenty of oil. Moderate pressure.

I have now aquired some 1/16" stainless strip and I shall make a link as you have described. Thank you for the information it was a great help. Can I ask should the link float or is it tightened up solid?

The link is tightened as it can be moved to adjust spring tension.
