A7/A10 Camfollowers. Radiused or Flat?
« on: 26.11. 2015 14:12 »
Hi Folks,

I need to know, (1856 A&SS) as my cam followers need regrind, if this is a flat grind or a radius and if a radius, what radius? I susect they are flat when knew but they are sure radiused now on the second hand pair I bought!

Secondly, BSA gives two different part numbers but the followers seem identical..any way to tell em apart?

Cheers

Peter, (in Kenya)

Initial disclaimer: This is from memory.

The cam followers, (sometimes called tappets  ;)) have a shallow radius. I'd guess it's something like a 6" radius.

Cam followers are pairs; they have a flat side that sits against their mate; hence different part numbers.

G'day Peter. New would be my choice and probably cost effective compared to stellite weld & regrind.
Greybeard, 1.25" radius.

If the four cam followers are identical then you have a mismatched set. The centre pair have a decent slot in them as they are retained by a large pin, while the outer pair don't have that slot machined in them.
A good rider periodically checks all nuts and bolts with a spanner to see that they are tight - Instruction Manual for BSA B series, p46, para 2.
