A/7 Brake lever
« on: 03.12. 2015 09:54 »
I am having few problems trying to sort out which brake lever goes on an early s/a A/7, its a 1954, I think it was the first of the s/a. So far I have cut, bent and welded an old lever, which is not the correct one and still I need to bring it out at least another 1" to clear the exhaust. The one I have been playing around with is a 42-7004 I believe there were various versions of this, the 54 Gold Star lever which looks like it has the correct bend to go under the foot pedal but I cannot determine whether it is splayed out or not. The 54 is not a cross over type lever.
Any help or advice on which lever I should be looking for would be welcome.
Kind regards TTJohn *????*

John, I thought the '54 used the ariel ally  hubs ? the one I had certainly did and was a cross over even down to the cable which was a real pain to get due to the brake activating arm requiring a different brake olive . or have my 4 remaining brain cells gone awol .

I also am trying to piece together a '54 (A10). I have a '62 RGS scrambler pedal, which doesn't clear the footpeg. A '60 Super Rocket pedal appears to have the correct bend to work, but will need modifications. As you said, it runs a rod direct to the drum, no crossover. I'll be curious to see how you work it out.

Been scratching my head trying to get round the problem, I put the 42- 7004 under the bench, I have now used a cross over type lever, removed the clamp bolt, welded up the split were it clamps, also welded a 1/4" spacer to outside, drilled the whole spline out to 3/4" so that I can use the existing axis point. The lever I used was numbered 68-7011 which I had lying about in the shed, I have not completely finished the job yet, just one or two tweaks to get it set up correctly but it clears the exhaust & foot peg and I feel sure it will do the job.
Topdad, my A/7 has the qd crinkle rear hub.

Hi All,
Quote
John, I thought the '54 used the ariel ally  hubs ?

The 54/55,  A7/10's had the QD splined hub and rod operated brake
A7 had a 7in front ans A10's an 8in, both single sided hubs

jachenbach,
Did the RGS scrambler have the clamp on footrests? or the standard A10 type?
Maybe this is why the pedal fouls the footrest??

The part number for the 54/55 and GS footbrake pedal is 42-7024, the cast on number will be one or two away from this,  (as far as I can tell) the pedal eludes me in the workshop??

...drilled the whole spline out to 3/4" so that I can use the existing axis point.

As a '54, the axis point you are referring to should be a boss through the frame where the pillion loop meets the vertical frame member. Is this what you have?

May be bad header pipe bend radii...
I had a similar with my '52/3, but as a Plunger, obvious mounting differences. I had originally used a crossover type pedal(can't remember the #), and no way was going to work, but even with the correct pedal I had to shape it, and ended up cutting 30mm off the top end of the header(both) to get it 'almost' right
Started building in about 1977/8 a on average '52 A10 -built from bits 'n pieces never resto intended -maybe 'personalised'
Have a '74 850T Moto Guzzi since '92-best thing I ever bought doesn't need a kickstart 'cos it bump starts sooooooooo(mostly) easy

Yes the RGS scrambler has the clamp-on footrests. I've been looking at pictures of unit single (e.g. 441 victor) pedals and I'm wondering if they'd work. Need to get some dimensions. They were a left side brake and rod actuated. The basic shape looks about right. Just a thought.
