I find it works better to stand the tool on the floor then stand on it while turning the leg using a length of bar through the axel or a length of pipe over the axel.
The hard bit is gelling enough down force on the tool to stop it riding up and out of the slots.

Took a two foot stilson wrench plus a lot of heat before they shifted, threads thankfully unharmed. Thanks for the advice, wouldn't have known what to do otherwise.

Now that the forks are in bits I think the stanchions are toast.

They usually are! At least it's not a Honda so you won't need a mortgage to replace them!

Yes a really bad design. Water gets up the trousers and over the top of the seal holder. Sitting on top of the seal for years till it all fills up with oil leaking past the seals. Oh I'd better put new seals in! Doh, make that stanchions too *rant*.
