A10 frame brackets?
« on: 21.02. 2016 12:24 »

Hi,

I wondered what these brackets should be used for? A sidecar?

Do this bracket need (2?) of these rubbers to support the tank? http://www.draganfly.co.uk/index.php/a65anda50/product/9064-petrol-tank-rubber-buffer

G'day Fox.
Pic 1 hole above brake is nothing, the other is for rear set pegs (is there the same on the other side?) or for a different rear brake linkage.
Pic 2 One pair of rubbers

I am frightened right how because I must disagree with one of my boyhood idols, Muskrat.

I am sure the hole above the brake is to access the chainguard mounting bolt. Then, I'm 92% sure the gusset with the sleeve in the pillion loop is for sidecar attachment. I've attached a photo of the rubber tank bumpers mounted in my _________ (Fill in the blank, I don't know what to call it and "dangle down" is just wrong.) You can see I've used the top set of holes for the bumpers In my case (with a 2-1/2 gallon tank) it works out that the tank stiffener passes through the bottom set. Others probably have it different.

Finally, you might notice that the rubber bumper is shaved. That was the only way I could get the tank to fit over them.

Thanks  *smile* There is no brackets like this on the other side, so it must be for sidecar use.

I will order those rubbers.

What's a chainguard? Who's silly enough to put a sidecar on a bike that corners so well?? (sorry RR) ::hh:: *red*
In my defense Chaterlea25's RGS rearset mounts look similar.

No offence taken; they can corner with big slidies on 3 wheels  *whistle*, but 3 wheels make lane splitting on the highway tricky.

Yes its a sidecar lug, only fitted on the later swing arm frames as plungers were preferred in the day by the sidecar fraternity, so the early swing arm bikes didnt have those lugs and they differ to the goldie type mounts on the RGS which are smaller/different and on both sides!
I don't know if BSA ever considered continental sidecars and fitted a RH lug on exports  *dunno*
Has anyone ever seen a RH sidecar lugged frame?

I was told some years ago about the bracket on the foot peg loop that it was for a sidecar there will be only one on the left side. I was also told that these brackets were only fitted to the road going models ie the A7 and Gold Flash but were not fitted to the Shooting Star and the Super Rocket as they were sports models. To back this up my 1956 A7 has that bracket on the left side but not on the right, my 1963 A65 also has the one bracket in the same place it is the road going version of the A65 Star Twin. If what I was told is true then if you go to look at a Shooting Star or Super Rocket and it has that bracket on the frame then I would question wether that is indeed the correct frame for that bike.

Hi Bob,
I believe you were told a load of porkies *conf*
The Super Rocket has the same bracket, All the variations of swing arm A7 and A10's except the RGS
use the A7 prefix to the frame numbers
the dating literature does not differentiate between them

Cheers

Further to the bracket, it was not fitted on the first EA7 frames but was from 1957 or thereabouts.

Trev has nailed it. Not fitted to the early frames but fitted to all the later frames excl the RGS

Thanks for the clarification but where my info came from was way back in the mid ninties I bought basket case which I was led to believe was an A10 everything was A10 except the frame the tinware was painted A10 beige it was a Shooting Star frame as authenticated by the BSA owners club and the frame number began EA7 and it did not have that bracket it was a May 1956 frame. I had asked at the time about the bracket being missing as I was contemplating fitting a sidecar which never happened. My present bike is a genuine A7, frame begins EA7 I have the original log book and it is also 1956 July and it does have the bracket.

G'day Mr Fox, the holes above the brake crossover shaft are for a tool which widens the frame to enable fitting of the swingarm, I use threaded rod for this procedure. Cheers Tomcat

Tomcat,

I wonder if such a tool was/is aftermarket or if BSA themselves decided they could make the holes dual-purpose? With the swingarm installed, the mounting hole for the chain guard appears immediately behind the large hole in the bracket. That bracket hole is the right size for passing a socket.
