Indian Petrol Tank feedback
« on: 19.05. 2016 07:52 »
I decided to get a new petrol tank for my A10 bitsa in preparation for the Italian International.  My current tank was 2 gallon one and I didnlt want to spend too much time looking for fill ups.

So I ordered an Indain repro tank via Amazon. I went for the Goldie tank for purley aesthetic reasons.

On ordering I was immediately infomed that delivery would be between 13th May and 3rd June. It arrived on 13th May, very well packages and I was not disappointed on opening the package. It certainly felt like it was made of a decent guage steel.

It came with a filler cap but not taps, badges or bracing piece, but I knew this on ordering and a few moment online and I had them in my hands next day.

The paintwork nad chrome were very good but if I was nitpicking the pre-plating polishing has left very minor flats in the chrome side panels so at certain angles you can just see slight uneveness. But this would only be an issue for conkers peeps.

It fitted perfectly with no problems ater I had given it a good rinse out first with parrafin and then repeatedly with a dilute traffic film remover solution and then load os clean water.  Lots of small particles came out so it was worth doing. The Bap taps I use have very good filters so I'll run it for a while and then clean then.

Having had fuel in it for a few days it looks like the red primer inside the tank might be blistering so a follow it filter clean my be essential. I'll let you know.

Overall I'm chuffed to bits and compared to what I paid to get my SR tank replated and painted, the £250 cost of a new tank, including postage is incredible value.

Now to get some patina  *smiley4*

It's good to hear of someone who's happy with an Indian tank. Interesting that Amazon sell them; you should have a good Returns policy with them if needed.

There are a number of Indian companies making tanks. It would be helpful to know which company made yours?

Just had a look on Amazon, search was BSA petrol tanks, and supplier listed as Enfield County, which does not seem to appear on Ebay listings.
Other item of interest within search category was 300ml auxiliary fuel tank + petcock, @ £20.99 with free delivery.

Got an indian plunger tank delivered last year just before summer. Drove it around all summer unpainted until the beginning of this year, when I took it to the painters. It came back superbly painted, and I pinstriped it myself.
Happy with the work done, I mounted the tank and drove the plunger around for a couple of months until 2 weeks ago, on a ride out I noticed a drip on top of the timing cover...
I pulled over to see what it was, and then saw a steady dripping coming from my newly painted tank. The bottom weld had developed a hairline crack... *problem* *angry* *bash*
I just got it back from a mate who is a specialist welder/brazer. He silver soldered it and managed not to damage the paintwork to much, so some touch up will do.

That's a real shame Morris ,alas it could happen to our old original tanks at any time now !. I've had a split round the centre bolt hole on 2 previous bikes . Good to know someone  with those brazing skills though , cheers Bob.

I got mine from a eBay dealer in India.. it came with a lockable fuel cap...
The reason it was lockable is because the filler hole neck is not the standard type &
a stock fuel cap will NOT fit on...  *rant*
Paint & chrome is just passable, so you gets what you pays 4...  *eek*

Just looked at EBay and "Enfield County" is in big red letters at the top of the pictures.

I bought an Indian tank 3 years ago for my 57 RR.  It has held up really well overall, but now the thin chrome is allowing surface rust pin spots to appear if I don't keep it heavily waxed!  It looks original until you look at the bottom of the tank.  The shaping is not right, but unnoticeable to the uneducated.  I bought it from a stateside distributor in case it had real problems I wouldn't have to deal with sending it back to India!  I recall paying $300USD, then paint, decal, pinstriping, etc.  Probably still about $700USD in it!

Just this week I picked up a set of rear plunger covers from a reputable dealer here in Melbourne.
He had them on order for several weeks & I had a 3 week wait till they arrived...
Undid the packaging & discovered they had been painted directly over lumps of RUST  *pull hair out*
I rang the dealer & voiced my disgust, & was told that his supplier was the only company making them.
I was offered a exchange, but as I decided I'd clean them up & paint them myself i'd let it slip..
I bet they came from you know where...   *whistle*

I bought a set of chrome Mudgaurds and stays (GS & SR) from Vintageparts india on Ebay, and wont be buying anymore parts from these people. The front 'guard is very nice, the rest isn't. The best way to buy these parts is from a dealer as I did with an 8" headlight from Cobb Smith at Scoresby. You can look at the parts before paying, although this service comes at a premium. If you are aiming for perfection use original parts and be prepared to have your wallet cleaned out!

I ordered from them once 30 years ago. The old fart was so rude I've never been back. I hear his son is a little better.
Cheers
