Pilot jet cleaning
« on: 31.05. 2016 11:21 »
I have been told that a #78 drill bit is what is needed to clear out any blockages in the pilot jet. Does anyone know where I can get one from? In the mean time I have cleaned out my jet with a piece of guitar string and it has transformed the running of the bike. I have had a quick look on the internet but I am not quite clear what exactley I should be looking for. So everything is OK for now but I would like to get a drill bit for use in the future.

G'day John.
It depends on the jet size you have and which carb. #78 = 0.016" which is the size of a fixed pilot jet in a concentric, about equivalent to a 20.

The No 78 drill is for the concentric carbs.
You usually buy them in packets of 20 from an enginering supply shop.
No chance of geting just one.
Or from a hobby shop. a set of number drills for about $ 20
Some bigger tool shops also carry them.
I find they fit into the plastic extension tube on most spray cans.

Ah yes, forgot to mention what the carburettor is. It is an Amal 389 pilot jet 25. As I mentioned I did the job with a piece of guitar string and it is clear for the time being. If I need a different size bit for a 23 jet what size would that be? Thanks for your replies chaps.
