Before I went wholly down the DIY route I bought some stainless barrel studs.  I'm pretty sure they were made, by a reputable supplier, from 303 stainless.  303 is one of the 'free machining' grades, kind to tools and nothing special in terms of tensile strength.
Surely, (don't call me Shirley!) barrel studs don't need to be high tensile unless the engine is a highly tuned racer. I cannot imagine that my old plunger would break barrel studs!! As a matter of fact, I carved my studs from wood.

I've got the cyl studs & case bolts/studs from this mob http://www.motalia.net/index.php?cPath=419&osCsid=oshj8g5gpea2u89ipmjefq1576   and very pleased. They have a good selection of studs  http://www.motalia.net/index.php?cPath=1_263_403_417

hi guys, yeah the reason I made mine was that I was going from a thin flange barrel to a thick flange one. I imported some thick flange studs from a Bsa parts dealer only to find that the length was the same and only difference was more fine threads and less course threads so they are still in the bolt box, cheers
