Hello
on my 1961 super rocket I've dissembled the steering head with plan to install some new SRM tapered roller bearings. however there's deep groves in the stem as per the photos below. how bad is this and what to do? I'll at least have to file the groves down to get the old bottom cup off. will the taper bearings save me from needing to do more prior to reassembly?
thanks
Mike

If it was mine I'd fill that that deeper groove up with weld, the one near the thread. The other groove does not look deep enough to worry about.

I've got a box of bottom yokes if you need one...

A good rider periodically checks all nuts and bolts with a spanner to see that they are tight - Instruction Manual for BSA B series, p46, para 2.

Hi,
I would go with RR's offer of a replacement yoke, as you are both in NZ
I would be afraid of the damage at the bottom of the stem could lead to cracks

That is good advice, getting that welded up could be a bit dicey
