Front hub not flush...
« on: 27.08. 2016 08:23 »
After having a few issues with the front end on my A10, now it's all together and rideable, the drum is not flush with the hub and when you operate the front brake it moves Quite considerably.
Is this normal?  As on my Flash it doesn't do this.
Any suggestions please....
Paddy.

G'day Paddy.
In a word no.
Do you mean the brake plate is moving? Is it the alloy full width (Ariel) hub? If the axle is done up tight I can't see how it could move.
Cheers

It's not the airiel hub I think is the half hub type (I'll try and post a pic)
Had an issue with the axel not "biting in'" but managed to get it tight.
Cheers.

Hi Paddy,
Sorry to say you are still on trouble with your axle *sad2*
When tightened it should pull everything against the fork leg, there's a gap in your photo
The "top hat" that fits between the bearings should fit through the bearing, brake plate and into the fork leg
Are the bearing retaining rings tight?
No washers or spacers are used

Oh dear. I guess I'll have to locate another axel and re assemble.
Damn ...

That brake assembly looks very wrong.  On my bikes the edge of the brake plate fits outside the O.D. of the drum.  I think you have incompatible parts there, possibly from different years.

There are at two (at least) different styles of brake drum of that type, one plain and one with lip
Then there are a couple of more versions of the finned cast hub

The whole front end is very original.  I've found a photo of the bike before the wheel was removed and reassembled, and it did fit together. Also the spindle was approx 15mm out of the right side fork leg, so the spindle is fooked as it's not pulling the assembly together properly. I've just ordered a new spindle and just hope there is no damage to the wheel/forks etc.
