Neutral issue
« on: 01.09. 2016 21:18 »
So my 57 A10 Roadrocket gearbox is freshly rebuilt first off .  The problem is that is is really difficult to locate nuetral . I can't feel it at all with my foot . If I reach down and shift with my hand I can eventually get it into nuetral but it doesn't feel like it's in the groove very well .  Isn't there an adjustment on the bottom of the case to put more pressure against the nuetral groove in the plate ?  It popped into gear on me once while sitting still . Luckily I was on the bike with my foot on the brake .

Hi
If the detent spring is in good condition then the correct adjustment is about 3 threads showing below the locknut

It had like 4 threads showing so I turned it into 2 threads . Still can't find nuetral .  This is damn frustrating . I should be riding this machine. Should I keep turning it in to see what happens ?

 So T'bolt, what's it do?
First up, are you shifting up for first and down to 2nd,3rd>4th?
Maybe it has a reverse campate?
In either case, you may be trying to find neutral between 3rd & 4th.
 I know it's a long shot *conf*

Otherwise, going deeper maybe the ... nah its a swingarm, I'll let you try ^that^ first
Started building in about 1977/8 a on average '52 A10 -built from bits 'n pieces never resto intended -maybe 'personalised'

Its freshly rebuilt; theoretically no gear wear or selector plate wear to worry about  *whistle*.
But it wont stay in neutral (assuming it is neutral - std is 1 up 3 down) -that is a big worry  *doh*. I'd be taking off the end gearbox cover and with the engine off check the selector plate is nice and solid. You should be able to change gears with a screw drivers leverage, each gear including neutral should be positive, you can turn the back wheel to assist testing each gear. Ideally the box should have had this verified before putting into the bike.

These motors should not fall out of neutral. If in doubt you can strip it all in situ if you remove the clutch, its not a big job but it needs resolving.

My first thought is the clutch dragging. Is it easy to get gears with the motor off?

You both were right !  I was trying to start it in between 3 and 4 .  I must have read somewhere about a reverse selector plate .  This is my first British bike and it was a pile of parts when I got it a year ago ...literally .
That's my excuse ! Ha
Thanks again all!

That is a relief! as yes it should be hard to find neutral between 3rd and 4th  *whistle*
