As for carbon destroying bearings, no offence, I'm not convinced.

Thats your prerogative, but its not just carbon in the sludge trap, its also small chunks of very abrasive metal, and the only way for it to get to the aftermarket oil filter is by going through the big end bearings, which the sludgetrap was designed to prevent. If you have a magnetic sump plug you will see the stuff I mean stuck to that.

If you want to take the risk, that's up to you but I was only trying to stop you doing something you would probably seriously regret.

Let us know how you get on, best of luck.

If you use all the sensible mods in Todays "armory" you can do little more Josh.

If you compile the above posts and condense them down you have:-

1. Modern Oil 20 weight or above.
2. Change it regularly
3. Clean Oil Tank regularly
4. Fit aftermarket filter
5. Fit Sump plate with Magnetic sump plug
6. Make sure your cetrifugal filter (sludge trap) is clean.
7. Be kind to your engine when you start it

Did i catch it all folks?

Does that about sum it up or did i miss something?

Steve

Thats about it.
Looks very easy and short when power pointed but you really need to know a bit of the background behind the points to understand why.

My own approach would be to start with a clean engine, with no significant sludge deposits, and stick with detergent oil. If there is a significant amount of sludge buildup in your engine, you might want clean it out before switching, or perhaps just stay with the non-detergent oil until you do an overhaul.

Sounds like good advice to me!

Well Trevor you gave us most of the background and a good read it makes!

Plus a few bits and bobs from the other lads and were there!

I think it would be a good thing for a Bike magazine to publish for those un initiated!

I guess run the engine with 3 dishwasher tablets in the oiltank for a week to clean it out then a filter and clean oil ..... No dont do that only joking!!!

(I only use dishwasher tablets in the dishwasher when cleaning the Head and Carbs when the wifes out!!!)

The Classic Motorcycle mag did an article on the very subject in their Castrol sponsored "You were asking" pages a few months ago.

In a nutshell, the advice from people a lot cleverer than me was don't put detergent oil in an engine which has been run on non detergent oils unless its been cleaned out during overhaul - reason - the detergent breaks the shite away and carries it to the bearings and can do serious harm - which we obviously wouldn't want to do to our beloved BSAs.

I guess this brings us back to the start.
