Starting Bike With Other Leg ?
« on: 01.12. 2016 10:35 »
Hello, I was just wondering if anyone uses their left leg to kickstart their bike, either by choice or by force ? Do left handed people use left leg , never seen it done .Got result of a scan last night and need an operation to join some bust ligaments on right knee, doc said may take into new year for op then physio . So im thinking that's going to be spring by time its right if it ever is sorted.
I remember some lads in 70.s used to start their hairdryer scoots with left leg (weird breakaway bunch ) and was wondering if poss an A10 ? Just in case I need to before summer comes back  *smile*   Cheers Dave

A mate of mine damaged his right knee ( idiot used to go potholing ) badly ,could only afford his bike so he had to get used to using his left leg ,it was only a speed twin but he did it, best of luck.

My son Luke used to naturally use his left foot to start the A10. He did it mostly but struggled at times. He's not left handed so I have no idea why. I beat him continually until he used his right foot all the time, but it has not improved his ability to start it.

Gets even trickier astride the bike, facing forward. OK, OK, I'll give it a breather.   :o

Now you mention it (and glad you did, saved me doing it) unless I'm in a time warp, I'm fairly sure this was discussed a while ago

Hi All,
*????* *????* *????* I'm left handed but use my right leg to start the bikes, even when I had a lefthand kickstart bike I had to use my right leg ??

Dave, its just the excuse you need to buy the electric start kit for the A10 !

I often do it lefty with the bike on the center stand, especially if I need to start'em without getting on (tuning etc).

It's really too cold to ride, but all this talk about starting up got me itchy, so I thought it wouldn't hurt to circulate the oil a little. While I was at it, I thought I'd use the left leg. Took a bit of getting used to, but it worked.

Here's the video (not showing the kicking) and you also get a look at my oil filter bodge.

Then, while I was looking around to see and hear recordings of other bikes running, I stumbled on this video from Pedro. He shared it before, but I thought it would be fun to look at again.

Thanks for replies, Angus that's just like my dad  *smile*.   John funds wont stretch to an electric start at mo so I may need to teach wife to start it or get her to push......shes a strong lass ! ;).
Watched that Henry Cole on tv yesterday, and he bought a Husqvarna dirt bike from the 70,s and that had a left sided kickstart , did not know any bikes built with one, anyway I start training tomorrow afternoon for lefty kick vroom vroom and will start with 3 Shredded wheat and a Marmite sandwich in the morning just hope it starts as easy as Pedros one  *smile*

Conversely, I have had the misfortune to own left kick machines on odd occasions, and in fact have one I’ve bought just recently. I really can’t get on with that at all. I have to stand on the left side of the bike and use my right foot.

G'day Pedro, good to see your still lurking in the background  *wave*.
Unfortunately no the electric leg won't fit on a plunger.
Cheers

Pedro,

The chromed primary and timing covers, and rocker box, remain from the rebuild in the '70s when I didn't know better and no one cared. I re-chromed the hubs in the 2003-6 restoration to honor the bike as it was in '79 when someone turned left in front of me. Then, I guess the clear-coat from the 2005 paint job has held up decently.
