Speedo screws
« on: 12.12. 2016 10:02 »
I have dismantled my speedo so that I can repaint the case. As part of the general beautification process I soaked the 2 screws over night it Cocoa Cola ( indicated in the picture) to clean them up. The screws looked like they were brass. That assumption was wrong. The the screw heads are only brass plated, and the coke had caused it to flake off. So, my question is this: Does anyone know where I can find replacement screws? Brass or stainless would be OK. I have tried painting them with gold paint but that looks awful.

Angus, thanks for your reply. Well as it happens I have now managed to find a source of supply for the screws here:  http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2x-Case-screws-for-Smiths-Chronometric-Speedometer-Tacho/310968442546?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D38661%26meid%3D84d7477de21b401f9fc8a80b98984eb3%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D6%26mehot%3Dag%26sd%3D311502463760 they are zinc plated. Not brass or stainless unfortunatley. As a matter of information for anyone else that may need to know  the actual size of the screws is M5 x 0.75mm pitch thread x 9mm long. I am still puzzled about why Smiths brass plated the heads rather than make screws out of brass.  Cost cutting I suppose. Nothing about motorbike mending is easy or straight forward is it?

Brass screws would have reacted with the alloy base unit they screw into  *eek*

John, I learn something every day. That thought had never occured to me. I am well aware of galvanic reaction problems between dissimilar metals, but do you know why brass would have been choosen to plate the heads? I would have thought that cadmium or zinc would have been the plating of choice. Not that it is of crucial importance but it would be interesting to know.

Ya know, they're metric, so PO could have picked them up anywhere.

Could have been yellow passivated zinc plating.
