Footrest Up Angle
« on: 22.12. 2016 23:04 »
Can  anyone tell me if the peg up angle seen in the photo looks right? I've already straightened the peg with respect to the arm of the bracket which appears to be intentionally rotated upwards with respect to the cross-shaft centerline. These are from my barn-find A7. The A10 seems to be the same, but I thought I'd finally ask if this is normal.

I would have thought all footrests should be basically horizontal when fitted to the bike, otherwise it would be uncomfortable for the rider's feet? I've just checked and the A10 I've nearly finished restoring has definitely got horizontal footrests!

They all ended up bent upwards, from the bikes being dropped.

Thanks for your input guys.

The bike had definitely been dropped, probably more than once. You can see where I heated the peg to straighten out an obvious bend in the one that's shown. I'm just not sure about the small twist in each arm that shows up as obvious up-angle in the pegs. It could be tricky to heat the arms enough to twist them. The MAPP gas torch worked for the peg, but the arms are a lot more meat. A small hurdle, I suppose.

Back to the issue of the bike being dropped, the brake crossshaft and the long footrest stud are also bent, apparently from a drop to the left (vs. the right footrest in the picture) but the peg on the left was not similarly bent.

Uuuh, just remembered I could check photos in the several books I own. Pictures and drawings of new bikes show the straight-out design. Some photos of older bikes show some up-angle. Considering how legs hang, there might be a case for up-angle being more comfortable, versus bending ankles to be flat-footed.  I doubt BSA worried about that.

Anyway, I'll wait a bit more to hear more opinions before trying to twist the arms.

Thanks.

Its not really what they " Should " look like is it ? ........I would tweak them to what is comfortable for your feet when your riding it. Nothing worse than a bike that the pegs make your feet ache after a few mile  *smiley4*

My foot pegs are horizontal

So are mine, it would look odd if they weren't?
