1958/59 A10 Frame Differences
« on: 24.12. 2016 18:58 »
I'm trying to identify the differences between a 1958 A10 frame and later frames.

On the 1959 and later frames, the rear brake outer cable bracket is mounted on the frame in the position shown by the red arrow. However, the Parts Book picture below of a 1958 frame does not show the bracket at that position. Can someone please tell me where the bracket is on the 1958 frame because it's not obvious from the Parts Book?

I think 58 frames were as you indicate up August when BSA started making the 59 models where the bracket was a flat piece of steel welded in the same position but behind the tube. I notice that the frame shown is B31 not A7

Bsareg is correct. I have 1958 and 61 A10's. The '58 has a three-sided brake cable anchor whereas the later ones have flat plate bent round the tube. These differences correspond with differences in the rear brake plate where the 58 brake plate has the brake adjuster cast into the brake plate at the top, whereas the later brake plate uses the fulcrum pin/tie bar bolt for the brake adjuster. If you fit the wrong back brake plate you can have  a hell of a job getting the rear brake cable to fit.

Many thanks guys for your feedback. If I understand correctly, on the FA7 frame for 58/59, the anchor plate is on the inside of the frame (hence why I can't see it in the above picture) and I can now see from the Parts Book that the rear brake plate has the cast lug for the cable adjuster. My slight dilemma is that I have an A10 with a 58/59 frame number but a frame and cycle parts which are consistent with a later GA7 frame? My engine is dated 1960/61.

The picture provided is from the Pre-Unit A Series Parts Book. However, the B31 frame for '58 is more or less identical.

It is possible to get brake cables to suit mis-matched brake plate and frame, a very common problem. I stock them! Give me a ring after 9th January
