Works records - tally number
« on: 23.01. 2017 19:10 »
Couldn't resist buying another bike!, it came with a certificate containing information taken from the BSA original factory records and makes reference to a "TALLY NUMBER". Does anyone know what this is?
Thanks
Rob

A lot of workers in BSA were on piece work so the "tally " would be the number of completed units done, in the case of dispatch it would follow that it was the  number of complete models built during say a day or week/month /year  ,just my tuppence worth. cheers

The works records I've seen show 'tally numbers' that are in the thousands. It's possible the tally number was the unique identification number for each machine produced within the factory rather than identifying it by the engine and frame number combination.
