Auto A/R Unit
« on: 01.02. 2017 08:23 »
Addressing the weak bob weight springs, I removed the A/R unit for inspection, and off the mag, the mechanism worked perfectly, the weights springing back with a snap.  I was under the impression that the centre bolt should be removeable, but it seems to be held captive within the unit.  The horseshoe washer is in good condition, but the plate with the two holes is distorted on the outer rim, the centre being fine.  During the course of handling the assembly I managed to drop it *sad2* resulting in slight damage to a tooth on the fibre gear. Most of the damage is to the front / top of the tooth, but the majority is ok.  I'm going to use it as I think it will be ok, but I was (and still am) cursing myself for being such a careless idiot.
As a trial, I put the unit back on to the mag and found that as the bolt is tightened it nips up on the bob weight mech so there's obviously something not quite right. *conf*  Work continues.................

Zander, why not use some THIN cyano glue to 'wick' into the broken tooth, should reinforce it and prevent further damage.

You're going to use a visibly damaged Tufnol gear?

Hmmm, you've got me thinking now! As has been said, a new one isn't that expensive, now I've looked at the Priory site

If your well into the A/r uni then wise to change the gear, however my flash was running pretty well with two adjacent teeth a bit mote damaged than yours.
Don't think I'd be worried too much running with that gear (mind you I am half Scots)
All the best - Bill
1961 Flash - stock, reliable, steady, fantastic for shopping
1959 Rocket Gold Flash - blinged and tarted up  would have seizure if taken to  Tesco

Although the damage appears superficial, i decided to exercise caution and replace it.  Gives me something to do until I b..ger  up another component!
On a positive note, having removed the primary chain cover and cleaned the inner  case there's no oil on the floor overnight,  and none on the bottom of the gearbox so looks like the oil spreader was the seal between primary inner and outer cases.  That being so, I'm not going to remove the clutch to renew the felt and other seals, but leave well alone!

IMHO the fibre gear is a fuse for worn bearings or a seized magneto. These are going to be issues for anyone who rides a lot so why not fit new parts and keep riding? *smile*
cheers TC

Received new fibre gear kit this morning, terrific service from Andrew at  Priory, plus my order from Draganfly. Full steam ahead, but with extreme caution!  Happy bunny today *smiley4*
