How to make a super quiet A10?
« on: 19.03. 2017 20:39 »
I don't usually want to silence my BSA engine but now that my dog is traveling with me in his sidecar...I wouldn't mind reducing the noise from the bike for the dogs sake. In June we're riding from Sweden to Wales, so there's quite a few hours to be spent on the road. My plan so far is to insulate the inside of the sidecar with special "sound proofing insulation" and slap on some wraps around the exhaust. The silencers look like they've seen better days though and wouldn't mind getting a new pair or modifying the new pair to further reduce the noise. Any ideas?

The sound proof insulation (in Swedish sorry)

I loved my muskydog, she did over 250000 Km's on the bikes with me. Never once failed to come when called. Never wore ear muffs. Maybe I should have. Deaf as a post now!!

I used loft insulation in the sidecar that I put back together - a Busmar D/A. I suppose ideally you want a 2-1 pipe that goes down the opposite side from the chair.

And maybe eye protection? I've seen a couple dogs wearing goggles.

Friends,

It's not too late to preserve your remaining hearing. Wear hearing protection when exposed to loud sounds, or moderately loud sounds for long periods (like long rides with loud pipes).

The price of those dog ear muffs! I reckon I'm gonna make him a wee helmet out of fiberglass and foam/insulation to help protect his ears. I'm fitting a windscreen to the sidecar so don't think the goggles will be completely necessary. Good to hear that muskrats dog survived all those miles. My dog doesn't come when called now, so it'd be hard to gauge if his hearing is worse or not anyway!  ;)

One of those adds had the wrong price at around US$600, I'm sure. They are actually more like US$60.

Wait, those $600 dollar dog muffs didn't say Harley on them anywhere did they? Because if they did, that price is a steal....

Hi Owain, well you got plenty of ideas for the dog, but not much for the bike  *smile*..
In days gone by when we used to do the "cafĂ© runs" most of us wanted loud Goldie silencers but one guy went the reverse, he fitted a siamesed exhaust system with one of the later s/a mufflers. It was sooo quiet and smooth that he used to blast past us all without us realizing he was coming - this would be a good solution for your problem because the single muffler is on the offside of the bike and it sounds like you need to replace the silencers anyway  *roll*...enjoy the run.

But I think part of the issue is it's a euro (left hand drive) sidecar so not a straight-forward fix?
Started building in about 1977/8 a on average '52 A10 -built from bits 'n pieces never resto intended -maybe 'personalised'

Siamese pipes on the other side of the bike will work wonders and extending the outlet to be just p
Cutting a "doggy hole right up the nose of the chair will also work wondersast the end of the back wheel will leave all the exhaust noise behind you.
