Primary case oil
« on: 19.05. 2017 02:46 »
Hi all, I don't have any drain plugs on the bottom of my primary case of my A7 Shooting Star, only the one round filler & inspection hole. How do I
1/ check the oil level &
2/ drain the oil
Does it just use ordinary engine oil?
Thanks

Hiya chotus- Is yours a Plunger/bolt-on semi unit, or Swing Arm ?

Either way there 'should' be a cutaway on bottom-est screw boss in the inside of the outer case, however; having said that, I have a spare Plunger outer case that doesn't have that (as per photo), but has a level screw cutaway just up to the left of the inspection/filler hole. (not sure which on a S/A model).

I added some oil to mine the other day and used some hydraulic oil, but only because I have it on hand and figured maybe no harm to see how it goes, given that ATF as normally used by many, and can also used as a hydraulic (jack) oil *conf*- (but which grade of ATF ? ? *fight*)

Rather than pull the level screw out, I added in 25ml increments, and had a look with an endoscope to see how high the tide was- but a small mirror with a bright light should work too...

duTch hello to you,
Mine is a 1955 swinging arm model. I'll attempt to add a photo of the case.

Yo- I saw the pic in your other post, Probably the level screw is same description (... just up to the left of the inspection/filler hole - three down from the front), but can't say for sure, will let en expert sort it.

I expect the drain will be the bottomest one *dunno*

Here you go. According to BSA the screw heads were painted red, buts it is vey unlikely that any red paint will be left after all this time. Probably not even the original screws fitted by now. Fibre washers behind the screw heads is a good idea. I never check the level using the level plug, I just drain the chain case, measure the correct amount of oil in an old measuring jug and pour it in.

That's what I normally do, but was feeling lazy and kinda wanted to check how much may have leaked out (lost count anyway *conf*)

My 51 wet sumps badly so the oil fills the sump (to crank level) and then flows into the primary (no crank seal till 53). Before a ride I remove the level screw to drain the primary to the correct level.

Muakrat, my 51 A7 never wet sumps. The primary chaincase oil level stays constant for years on end. If yours wet sumps to the extent of flooding the chaincase, it might be time for a spot of investigation.

G'day Black Sheep.
It's probably 20 years since I've had the bottom end apart. The next one will be soon as I found a crack in the drive side case that runs down through the engine # then turns forward for an inch. I'm getting a spare set ready for a swap over, so will be sorted then. I'm just in two minds whether to do the roller conversion and the A65 ball & spring mods.
Cheers
