multi part oil ring
« on: 04.07. 2017 14:29 »
Ok looks like maybe I'm about to be dragged into 2017 (with your help)
Need to sell my Flash to restore some dignity to our savings after changing our car last year, What with my knee operation it had sat in the shed for some time idle, so started to kick it over a month or so ago and noticed it was a tad smoky, probably to be expected, but thought I'd put a set of new rings in, turned out one oil control ring was broken.
So purchased a set of Hepolite rings from Classic bike shop, rings look fine and delivered in four days.
Here's the thing the oil control ring has two/three parts, the ring and a sort of beaded ring inside it,  I've not come on these before so would love some info on fitting them, the inner beaded ring has a wire running through it, do I have to cut this beaded ring and wire to size? or discard it

Could not get this post to post with pics attached (three jpgs all under max size) so will post in seperate post

I've been looking at these rings today. I removed the springy device inside the oil ring to check the gap. I assume you put that back inside the ring before you fit it. What did you do?

G'day Bill.
Yes as GB did. Usually there's a piece of wire at the spring joint, it goes opposite the ring gap.
Cheers

What did you do?

Something pretty stupid - I'll fes up in the hope it prevents someone else doing the same.
First I assembled the ring and tried it in the cylinder, it did fit in ( just didn't seem possible the spring could compress enough to fit but it did)

So fitted the rings to pistons, fitted piston clamps and lowered the barrels onto pistons, all went well until they came to the oilrings, one side went down but the drive side just did not want to go, then "click", I knew exactly what had happened ( you've guessed ), but why.
Only thing to do was off with the barrels and replace the oil rings (standard ones this time), taking off the ring clamps revealed the reason, timing side clamp was correct, drive side I had put on upside down ( so a gap where there is a cut out at the bottom of the clamp) just enough to allow the ring to protrude a smigen - hell hath no fury as a man alone in a shed with no one to kick or blame

So double check clamps please

Good one Bill, but your not alone.
I hate those three piece rings with the two thin rails and a separator. They do work very well but give no click if it goes belly up on installation. In one of my race motors a rail was dislodged and bent down between the piston and bore. As I oil everything a bit of smoke on start up is normal but after a minute it didn't stop. Had to bore +30 to remove the score.

can anyone suggest a good source for decent oil scraper rings for an a10 in std and +20?

my local usual supplier couldnt help me and not convinced my one piece rings are going to settle in.

Thanks all!
for the race engine I'm up against the clock for easter.

Thankfully a british parts specialist in Auckland does actually stock the new hepolite rings and the oil control ring is a 2 piece (an expander spring behind the main ring), so I can hopefully have those in hand to fit this weekend.

fairly sure I had those rings in Bender anyway and they were fine.
