Problems with Magneto K2F
« on: 12.06. 2009 15:15 »
Friends
I am of Brazil and I am here new in the forum. Excuse my bad English.
I took more than 10 years to recover a BSA A10 1950 and now that it is ready, I am with serious problems with the magneto.
He warms up (hot) and it doesn't work more.
Could you find out where I can make a good restoration of this K2F?
Somebody of the group writes in portugês.
Thank you very much!

Alguem do grupo escreve em português ?

Welcome to the forum, nice photo, nice styling !

Looks like the same magneto problem I described in the link topic provided above.

Some ideas for parts and repairs:

Arien,

Welcome to the forum. The english you have used has been understood. However, there are two people in my office who speak and write Portugese (both are in Sao Paolo until next week). I can ask them for some help if it is very limitied in number of occasions and length of communication. Translating from Portugese to English will be easier, as they could just read the communication to me. the other way around is more a problem. The forum is intended to be all in English, so if there is a brief communication you need to make in Portugese, send it to me as a personal message. I cannot promise regular availability of this approach to translation.

Ahem, here goes with my Portuguese, like me its a little rusty sorry.

-----------------------

Welcome to the forum Arlen, that's a nice bike you have there.

The problem with your magneto, is that when it warms up the wire windings start to fail do to the heat. You will need to have the Magneto serviced or repaired at a specialist repairer. Are you considering sending it to England for repair, there are many repairers here. I can find you the address of one here if you want.
Are there no Magneto repairers in Brazil?
Regards

Andy

Welcome, arlen.  I have never had a problem with the windings breaking down.  There is a myth floating around that the insulation is shellac, which is totally untrue.  In my experience, temperature related magneto failure is caused by the condeser.  Replacing the condenser has always cured this for me.  Modern replacements are available (stay away from NOS) but they are buried in the armature and therefore require a special puller.  If you just want someone to rebuild the magneto, I don't know of anyone who does it better than Ed Strain in Florida:

Ed Strain

Pinellas Park, FL  33781
TEL: (800) 266-1623
TEL: (813) 521-1597

It will cost you about $300US for a rewind, modern condenser, new bearings and re-magnetizing the housing.

Thanks Andy, thanks Richard, thanks for all friends!
Now I have my BSA A10 and one more mechanics completes of A10 that I want to recuperate.
Here in Brazil I sent already to 2 restoring but they only took my money, it was very bad.
I would like to send K2F to recuperate in a specialist, but the laws customs Brazilian is rigorous and they don't allow the entrance in Brazil of used products.
Same being recuperated for instance in UK, when it comes back to Brazil he would enter as used product and it would be obstructed in the customs.
The only alternative would be to enter in Brazil in a hand luggage/pacage...
I could also buy a ready magneto, already recovered...
Andy, where can I make the restoration of my K2F with quality? Is the price good?
Alex, Ed Strain is good!?
Our money in Brazil is very weak in relation to euros or pounds.
Thank you once again to all !!!!

Arlen,

I liked the videos.

Perhaps you or a friend are skilled enough to do some of the work yourself. If so, new parts for your magneto could be purchased from:
 https://www.magneto.co.uk/acatalog/Index.html

I was particularly interested where it says that the condenser comes with complete installation instructions. Perhaps write this company, explain your problem with Brasil customs, tell tham that you would like a set of the isntructions only, to determine if you want to undertake the job.

Arlen... It maybe a good idea to get to know DT who is also a member of this forum and lives in Brazil. Maybe you could get to know each other he could take your magneto to UK and get repaired in time for him to take back to Brazil. It's worth a try speaking to him.

Now here's my interpretation!... (Thanks to Bablefish! Did you guys really think I could speak Portugese?)

Arlen?

-------------------

If you can not import a used product into Brasil, could you ask the repairer to send it back as a new product ? It would look like new.

To assist, if you are unable to arrange this, I would discuss this with the repairers and arrange this on your behalf. Or I could send it to you myself, but you would need to tell me how to get around the Brazilian import duties.

I will do in the way that you are suggesting.
Which company do you recommend to do the service?
We will negotiate for them to order the invoice as new product.
I know FTW Motorcycles (375 pounds) and SRM (300 pounds), but I find a little expensive.
Will it be that got better prices?
