Front section enclosed chain case

  Was the front section of the enclosed chain case sold on every bike?

 Or if you got a bike with a chain guard, what kept the muck from the gearbox drive sprocket spitting all over everything?

 I have a chain guard from some other kind of bike that I am going to fit, it needs a little surgery to make it work. Once I get the correct guard it will be replaced. But looking at this I wonder if I need that front section to keep everything clean?

No. The engine breather pointed vaguely at the gearbox sprocket and chain providing a hit and miss bit of lubrication. Keeping things clean wasn't on the agenda. Mind you, a bit of chain lube flung around the bike is a pretty good anti-corrosion strategy.
Bikes with fully enclosed chaincases usually have rusted rear mudguards.

Lee, from 1956 the full width hub bikes had the front section fitted. The rest of the chaincase was optional.
A lot of people leave this off as it makes fitting the rear chain difficult but when it is missing there is an unsightly gap between the inner clutch case and the rear chain guard.

 OK guys,

 Thank you for taking the time.

 I am going to have to do some thinking here. The chain guard I have looks the part, but is too long. So I will cut this to not leave a gap.

 In the mean time I will keep an eye out for a good front enclosure, and get it prepared for when the real chain guard arrives.

It's been 6 months and the reproduction chain guard is still on back order from Dragonfly.

 I am having trouble fitting the guard
From an unknown bike I had knocking
Around. No matter how I hammer it, bend
It, pinch it, it still chain rubs.

Does anyone know off hand what the width
Of an open swing arm chain guard is
Supposed to be?

This one measures 1 and 1/8 wide, I
Think it may be narrower than stock. The chain does not run parallel to the swing arm, but this guard sure does.

 Hi John,

 Nope, front chain section not needed.

 I just didnt want to start a new topic and decided to keep this thread whole for the next poor b#stard who has s shabby old chain guard and is waiting on an infamous Draganfly "back order".

 My painter has all my tins except for the chain guard, I just need to get this one to fit well enough I dont rub a hole in it before the end of the block.

 I wonder if an original guard has some type of off-set to it. The guard I have rubs hard on the timing side right at the rear sprocket.

 Just trying to get the last bits buttoned up here, its 98% done and its all little stuff now. Like the seat cover, rubber for around the tail light housing, petcocks, and I still have to purchase parts to make cables that fit.

 That would be perfect!!!

 Laugh if you want about the old leopard skin, but over here some of that genuine retro chopper stuff demands huge money.

 There is a contingent of guys who want that stuff, because they build a 1958 harley as a chopper that was done in 1971. Confusing I know.

 One of the big things is to not put any parts on your 1971 chopper that were not available until 1973, they search ads in old chopper magazines to confirm this.

 Yes, there are bean counters in the world of choppers too. Makes no sense, but there it is.

 Anyone have an original Corbin King/Queen seat in excellent condition? Probably get two sets of barrels and a good large journal crank for it.
