Speedo Fault

These things may be super reliable, but they're way beyond my capabilities and patience.  Full marks for those who persist with servicing their own units.  Personally, I would sooner be on the road!

You, Sir, are not kidding!!  If I was to attempt it, I'd spend most of the time devising tools to make the job easier.  I can take most stuff apart and put it back together again, but I do like to be able to actually hold the parts with my fingers

Well I was prompted by this thread to take my b31' s chronometric apart, as it had a similar issue, with the 10, 100 and 1000 numbers jumping up every 10 miles.

I found the first of the five number reels had a worn "ratchet" on one side which caused it not to lock in position as each mile ticked over, this caused it to move the adjacent 10 mile reel and so on.

As a temporary fix I moved the duff reel to the 10,000 mile position where it will cause less harm.

I don't know where I will find a replacement reel! I guess I might end up having to take it to a specialist speedo fixer, or keep having to reset it to back to zero again every 10,000 miles 

It was VERY fiddly getting the 5 reels back in position,  to those speedo specialists!

Mate, mine went straight to Russell Smalley, a magnificent man here in the UK who used to work for Smiths!  Cost will be £75-ish for a full clean and rebuild.  I've tried (and failed) to put the odometer back together again on another chronometric and it was an absolute &%$% to do - never again.  I reckon the specialists are either magicians or have some special technique to get all the ratchets, springs and reels back together and located correctly - I've not even bothered looking at the rest of the mechanism.

I'm not a watch maker, nor do I intend to be.  If I want a watch repaired, I'll take it to someone who can repair watches - simples!!!!

Oh, and full marks to those who do have the patience and skills to learn - much praise.

Thanks Russell, I now have a beautifully functioning speedo!!!!!!!!!!!!!
