Dodged a bullet-Gearbox strip
« on: 18.12. 2017 16:57 »
Well started to strip the gearbox on the A7(haven't really touched it in years) and took off the outer cover. Inside it was obvious something was wrong. The circlip holding the mainshaft small ball bearing was half out because half the alloy housing has broken away and was wedged behind the kickstart ratchet. This could explain why the kickstart sometimes jammed, I found a bir more housing lying in the bottom of the outer casing.
Who knows what could have happened if those bits had got into the main case *eek* *eek*

G'day BSA500.
Intermittent kickstart jamming is mostly caused by a worn pinion bush or incompatible quadrant/pinion tooth shape (there is two).
When this happens and over zealous jumping on the lever could have caused the problem you describe.

Trust me there is alot of worn bushes/bearings on this box. Lucky I had a spare inner cover in my box of bits.

HI All,
This damage can be the result of hitting the bolt on the clutch shaft adaptor puller  *warn* *warn* *warn*

Never thought of that. Makes sense.
