Pillion Footrest Loops

Hi everyone , first post and first question ...got my 63 Flash frame stripped ready for blasting and coating but there is a problem - nearside pillion footrest loop is actually touching the Swinging arm , every thing else seems to be ok alignment wise so what i need to know is the distance between the loops ? inner or outer measurement - either will do . I have found frame dimensions online but none show this . Secondly very reluctant to remove the swing arm from the frame for powder coat because it needs no attention but would the silentbloc bushes suffer during the process ? cheers , Phil .

Hi and welcome to our great forum.
The swingarm bushes would certainly suffer during powder coat process as oven temp. gets up above 200c.
Removal of swingarm is not for the faint hearted so why not consider 2 pack paint, finish and durability these days is good, just need to be very careful during reassembly.

yes, thanks for that - ive had plenty of experience with swing arm spindles and bushes  *sad2* - thats why i dont want to go there ....centre stand pin is bad enough ( seized in ) but thats easily sorted ! I have considered painting and might just do that . Phil .

Not much space between swinging arm and frame loop.

On my A10 the left side gap is only about 0.06 inch and right side about 0.2 inch , with bike on stand and rear wheel off ground.

The frame may be slightly distorted after sidecar use, or it may have been dropped on the pillion rest and the loop pushed inwards, or a previous owner has filed a bit off the protruding inner tube of swinging arm bush because they thought it was a tight fit in frame, and put things slightly out of alignment.

I just bent mine out to give 1/8" clearance. My frame was a mess when it arrived. Sidecar mounts welded on the wrong side for AU.

Mine rubbed too.

 I put a bottle Jack between the loops and slowly put pressure on. I tapped the metal where i wanted my bending to "set" with a small hammer while it was under pressure, this helps.

 I powdered my frame, and now wish I would have painted. Easier to match and touch up later, than it is to by hyper carefully of the powder during assembly.

 If I remember right, I went for the very precise measurement of "clearance" on both sides.

 I remember looking for an actual measurement for the distance between the loops too and coming up with nothing.

 Way outta my league, but logic would suggest maybe that the loops be parallel, so if one was to measure the distance between them at the welds, and keep the outermost end of the loops the same from central  *dunno*
Started building in about 1977/8 a on average '52 A10 -built from bits 'n pieces never resto intended -maybe 'personalised'
Have a '74 850T Moto Guzzi since '92-best thing I ever bought doesn't need a kickstart 'cos it bump starts sooooooooo(mostly) easy

Thanks for the replies chaps, sorted now - the pillion footrests look straight and clearance for the SA is fine  , must have took quite a knock though .

My powder coater quotes for frame and s/arm seperate as the have to be split and masked up, he knows his bikes.
